You've a MXJ 6/4 already so step up to the JX 6/3.

The MXL is just a wider MXJ so doesn't add anything except capacity which you don't really need with spectra. Depending on the trip you can go with a topshot of 20-30 on the MXJ and be good to go. The JX will cover you for 30-40# for both bait and iron for that next class up.

    Gotta have backup's.

Like a few of the others have said, since you already have the MXJ and that will pretty much cover you in the 20-30# category get the J/X and that will cover you in the 30-40# range and if need be in a pinch you could use it for a 50# rig.

Since this is 4+ months old going to close it up now. No need of starting new hostilities.

I know that this is a old thread but, I have and like the AVET MXJ Raptor which I use for 30# (I could easily use this for 40#) and an AVET JX 2-speed, mc reel (not a raptor) which is my 40# reel.

For lighter work (15-25#), I will use my Calcutta 400 and a Newell 332 reduced to Penn 99 size with a Tiburon spool and frame.

I also have a Penn Squall SQL25N which is a back-up reel with 50# braid. I can use a flourocarbon leader of 20-40# test on this reel. I got this reel in primo shape at a local garage sale for $25...

For heavier work, I have a Shimano TLD-30 2-speed that has been reworked with new bearings by Ken's Custom Reels in Oceanside Harbor. I also have a Yellowtail Special Accurized Penn 4/0 and a Wahoo Special Penn Master Mariner with Newell conversion. I really like 2-speeds when fishing with 40-60# but, these last two "oldies but, goodies" are too nice to get rid of...
