the only prob about putting spectra and small lb lines is that the line teds to get stuck inbetwwen the spoll and frame . but you have to love them thier great reels

I have 6 with the oldest being over 40 years old. Still works great and used it up till 3 years ago when I went started collecting toriums.

You can use them for spectra but would look into the metal spool if ya do. The only draw back is the gear ratio. I would go with a 4 to 1 or better.

I have one, it's approximately 12 years old and still going strong. I use it all the time. In fact it was the first conventional reel I ever bought come to think of it. Prior reels were Diawa spinning reels for surf fishing and bat ray fishing off the south Newport jetty, the good old days!

This poll was started because of the following thread shakespeare tw30la2

Brad I hope this has helped you!! The Penn 500 is kind of like a standard that many other reels are compared to. It's reliable, strong, inexpensive, and parts are available for maintenance as well. Definitely a great choice for someones first conventional salt water reel. So far I am off by 25% on my prediction. I said I thought at least 50% of the GB members owned a Penn 500, last time I looked its up above 75%, more popular than I thought. Thanks everyone who voted!!
