Aloha from Lahaina Harbor, Maui, Hawaii. Since the last report, there have been two exciting developments. The marlin bite has turned on and some mahis are hanging around the buoys. Most of the boats are fishing the deep water in hopes of catching a marlin although there are still onos roaming the inside. The following photos contain some of Start Me Up’s anglers and their catch through the end of July.

The Moldcraft Wide Range, better known as the purple softhead, claimed another big one. Because the blue marlin was over 500 lbs, the anglers got their trip for free and Start Me Up made a $300 donation to a local charity.

Seven fish is an outstanding catch when you’re ono fishing.

Big fish are often caught right outside the harbor. This marlin bit before all the lures were in the water.

Family photos are always better with a marlin in the center.

Blue and green were the hot colors when the marlin bite first heated up. Captain Mike on the Start Me Up Too made this lure, which he calls the “Crackhead”. He poured the lure a couple months ago and has already caught bunch of marlin on it.

Everyone is happy when all the kids get a fish.

Catching a 288 lb blue marlin is a great way to start the morning. The day finished on a high note as well. The anglers tagged and released a 150 lb marlin during the last hour of their trip.

Three bites resulted in three quality fish for this family from Chicago. As evidenced by this photo, the blue marlin bite was hot on this day.
Numerous marlin encounters have occurred relatively close to Maui, giving half day charters a reasonable chance of catching a nice fish.
Marlin are notorious for missing lures on the strike. However, sharp hooks and a stiff drag snagged this marlin just above the eye.

    How about an afternoon marlin?
An enthusiastic group of anglers scored 15 mahis at one of the FADs. They also caught and released an oceanic whitetip shark.
This marlin is one of three caught on a six hour trip.
The other two marlin grabbed lures simultaneously. The 150 pounder was caught and released.
Nine mahis makes for an exciting morning.
Trolling the coastline of Molokai produced a mixed bag of fish.
These guys were an ahi short of a clean sweep. Nonetheless, obtaining the privilege of flying three flags is no easy task.

Those small tunas are the reason that the marlin are hanging around.

Tim and Ethan do the early departure trip every year. They had a phenomenal bait bite and then traded in some live opelus for mahis.
These anglers found a nice surprise waiting for them at the buoy.
Six mahis inhaled live opelus at the buoy and then a bonus ono took down a lure on the way home.
Bringing in half an ono is both annoying and exciting.
These kids dragged their dad fishing and caught a bull mahi. They also had a marlin bite.
Louisiana natives know how to reel in mahis. Unfortunately, their deckhand released the biggest one at the back of the boat.

Some marlin, such as this one, retain their color pretty well. The key is to keep the fish moist and protected from the sun.

Thanks for checking out this Start Me Up fishing report. Until the next one, tight lines.

    Aloha,
    Jonny
