We went, we saw, we kicked some Seabass.... Started out at the dock knowing we had a bumpy ride ahead of us, but no one really thought too much about that as we gathered around the stern to hear the safety blah, blah and give Andrew his super secret surprise birthday "Los Doyers" custom made fishing rod... I think he liked it, as he was really speechless....Thanks to everyone who pitched in to make it happen...Good Call Levitated in the bunks most of the night but woke up in the lee of Santa Rosa Island in grease flat conditions...Some had been up since the crack of dawn, but I crawled out of my bunk just before the grey...rigged up, dropped in a line, lit a smoke and within 5-10 minutes I was bit...Simultaneously Fred hooks up, not sure who else got bit just then cause I went up the side, but it was on for a good couple of hours....Flurries would come through and a bunch of us would hook up. We had a couple of casualties, but in the end we landed 23 Seabass. I was the high stick with 4 fish, Joey and Chris each had a limit and Mary and Mike (Wharf Rat) got 2, and a bunch got a single...Most notable was Woodman who finally got the seabass skunk stink off his back. We sat for a while and watched the rest of the fleet pull away one by one as they gave up, we waited it out for a bit and then finally succumbed to rock fishing. "Extreme Rockfishing" was how Joey cleverly termed it....and that is exactly what it was....We drifted in huge swell taking it up the shorts through the scuppers and got tossed around the deck like rag dolls, but it was well worth it. Quality was an understatement. I haven't seen reds that big at Rosa for a long time. We got it done in just three drifts and then jammed back into the protection of the island. We tried to drift in a different area where we saw good signs of squid, but all we hooked into were a couple of sugars to end the day. Kona burgers for most on the way in...Fred told me on the way home the Kona is the best burger he has ever had, ...way to go Andrew!!!! Always such a great time fishing with the Get Bent Crew. Tucker, Jason, Ryan, Miggs and A.A. Thanks again for the great fishing and even better company.
