Fished the first tournament of the Big Hammer Kayak and Float Tube Tournament Series at Haskell's Beach. We started off fishing for bass in the kelp out in front of the Bacara with a moderate pick of 1 to 2 pounders. Mostly on 4 inch Big Hammer swimbaits.

Around 10:00 am or so after a string of small bass I get bit by a fish that instantly buries me in the kelp - so fast that I had no idea how big or small the fish might be. I continued to apply steady pressure until the fish finally came loose. When it did I started cranking as fast as possible expecting to see another 1 pound bass come flying to the surface. Instead the fish didn't move and the more I reeled the more my rod bent into the water. After a nice battle I saw the head of a large bass (reminded me of the Q-105) skiff trip come to the surface. On the boga the fish went 7.5 pounds. It was caught on a 4 inch Clear Red colored Big Hammer swimbait on 12 lb.

The next tournament is scheduled for August 20th again at Haskell's Beach. Anyone who is interested can check out the website at:
