SEARCH FOR MISSING FISHERMAN CALLED OFF

The Ventura County Sheriff's Department says the search for the fisherman who went missing when his boat capsized Friday night has been called off with no plans to resume it.

The dive team spent a second day Sunday searching the ocean waters around the north entrance to Ventura Harbor and Marina Park and they found nothing.
In addition to the divers, they deployed a remote operated vehicle (ROV) with sonar, but came up empty.

They do not plan to return Monday and the search has been suspended indefinitely.

The incident happened Friday night when two men in their 60's were lobster fishing beyond the surf line near the rock jetty at the end of Greenock Lane and Marina Park.

Their 15-foot skiff was capsized by a five foot wave and both men, who were fully clothed, were tossed into the ocean. One of them managed to swim ashore, but the other went missing.

A massive sea and air search was conducted Friday night by several local, state, and federal agencies. It was scaled back when rescue swimmers were pulled out of the water following an encounter with a six foot long juvenile great white shark. The dive team then spent Saturday and Sunday searching but found nothing.

The victim's name is Chris Gregory.

I fish that area for lobster all the time. They were no more than a few hundred yards off shore just outside the harbor entrance. It's deeper water that gets shallow real fast so the waves stack up there. It can be a dangerous spot for sure.

    Sad news.

That's some bad news. Makes you wonder if the inside of the breakwall was open,if this would have happened.

Were they hooping the jetty off Greeenock Lane or the Harbor Entrance Jetty?

More fuel for the VTA Harbor commissioner...........We already know they hate hoopers...........

They were caught in the surf line just outside that jetty at Greenock. Not sure if they were try to hoop it, or lost engine power and drifted into the surf there or what, but that's where they got rolled over at. Heard there was alcohol involved but it's 3rd party info.
