Went on a bicycle trip from San Luis to big sur and did a little fishing on the way. I caught a couple rockfish off the point at Hearst state beach near San Simeon, and lost an eel in the rocks all using squid that day. The third day of the trip I stayed at the hike and bike at Kirk Creek campground and the next morning I hiked down to the beach for some surf fishing trying everything from big hammer 3", sand crabs, and big gulp sand worms. Finally after not catching anything from the sand I climbed up on a rock formation that went about 40' out into the water and picked some mussels about a minute went by before I had a fish on. I saw it in the wake of a wave and didn't know what it was but it looked big. after getting it up to me I recognized it as the familiar bsp that I catch all the time back in ventura county but this was the biggest one I have ever caught by far. my friend wasn't really holding the measuring tape right but I'd say it is just shy of 15".
