Hello, I'm trying to get better at using plastics from curly tails to swim baits this year and i need some help. I'm not to new to fishing, but pretty new, only good fishing for about a year and a half. I usually use live anchovies , but this year my very skilled friend and i want to compete in the plastic navy which is a kayak plastics only competition. so if you have any tips or suggestions for fishing plastics from colors to size to line type feel free to post.
    -Thankyou for your help. :)
( I fish in Mission Bay, Ca)

Go to the Big Hammer website and read the articles. There is a ton of good info on swimbait fishing. www.swimbait.com

Reds and browns seem to work best for me, also green in mid-summer. You can't go wrong with Big Hammer, but almost anything works on a hungry Calico.

Cast as close to structure, kelp, or boiler rocks as you can. If possible, bounce off the rocks into the water right in front of the rock. Near kelp, let the plastic drop for a few seconds before reeling. Expect to loose a few in the rocks or kelp. The bite is usually much better in the summer months so don't get discouraged in December. On a sandy bottom, bounce the jig 6" every few seconds across the bottom while drifting. Good luck and don't forget to post pics.

You"ll be hooked once you figure it out! I fish plastic over bait about 80% of time on most of my trips and am pretty successful. Stick with old blams (worm king), big hammers and bass trix in the reds, greens and browns. I like keeping these colors in different sizes usually 4 inch, 6 inch and some 8 inch.

    Try the Roboworms too.........

They're much more durable than the softer plastics & THEY WORK...!!!
Personally,I like to trim off the dorsal fin to give a larger hook gap.
    Good Luck...!!! ;)

Your retrieval technique also sometimes you get short bit so I slow my cranking down....changing up speeds fishing over a certain spot, start fast retrieve...medium retrieve, slow retrieve.....crank10 times stop 3 seconds, crank again....summertime fish are really aggressive, winter they slow up a bit....good luck!

Try either ProCure Calico Cocktail, Unibutter, or Hot Sauce.

You will do best when the tides are moving make sure you go out during the right times to ensure an even better shot at doing some catchin. I fish lots of plastics in the harbors and open water and my favorite choice is the FX Sculpin Roboworm 4" give it a shot.
