The jealous locals still know how to catch them on VAFB, and after you leave we will keep catching them...............................................................

Surf Beach is closed to Everyone - Active Duty included. It sits dead smack in the Federal Marine Reserve, and its also all sandy beach meaning the Protected Snowy Plover breeds there. Stupid flightless bird.

Was at Vandyland from 73-79, wife is from the village. I fish North V every chance I get when I'm visiting the "outlaws". Have they got the boat house on south V opened up for fishing again? Also, minuteman beaches has some great perch fishing also.

Yes the boathouse is open. And I've caught some MONSTER perch up here... I'm talking thick 16" Rainbow Perch who fight as hard as a lingcod. Good times up at Minuteman Beach... but I prefer the rocks... easier to get to and you stay more dry =P

Drive right in? There a road north of the base that you can drive to Point Sal?

There was an episode of inside sportfishing where a couple of locals were fishing the tide pools there. They were just dangling plastics right in the pools and catching some amazing rockfish.

    Lost tackle

Haven't done much rock fishing lately but when I did I used to use old spark plugs as weights. Bent the electrode down to the post and tied on there. If you got hung up the electrode would bend and release the line or at least break off there saving the rest of your rig. Get old plugs free at any mechanics shop. Beats the cost of lead!

I posted this back in 2011. Since this post (when I was a rookie angler) I founded a fishing club here on the Central Coast! We call ourselves JURASSIC SPORT FISHING. I've caught MASSIVE Lingcod and Cabezon, Thresher Sharks, Albacore, Salmon, and about 20 different species of Rockfish (11.5pound reds!)

Hook up with us at Facebook.com/JurassicSportFishing if you want to CATCH BIG fish on the Central Coast... VAFB is truly LEGENDARY!

    Also view us on Youtube.com/JurassicSportFishing

Poke poling is fun! We coined a term called Pocket Fishing... same concept just a little different application.

I moved to Vandenberg last summer. I do a lot of surf fishing on base. Really enjoyable, and good eating too. Caught a leapord shark at c5 last week. Under the size limit, but fun to catch!

    Just PCS'd here...

I just PCS'd in last week, and I'm very excited to try some salt water fishing! I've never fished in a body of water much bigger that the pine canyon lakes and surf fishing seems to have a pretty big learning curve. Anyone willing to let a new guy tag along? Maybe share some tips? Thanks!
