    hi,
i think that they put in the calcutta drags when they went to the 300A. you might want to try that route.

Only 1 reel for calico? NEVER!

    Calcutta 400 with 20# for 5-6" swimbaits
    Curado 300 with 20# for 5" swimbaits and jigs/creatures
    Calcutta 250 with 15# for 4" swimbaits
    Curado 200 with 12# for 3" and 3.5" swimbaits
Daiwa Coastal with 12" for crankbaits/spinnerbaits
Curado 100 with 10" for Gulp on a darter head
Torium 16 with 25 or 30# for surface iron

Ideally, however, you cant beat the calcutta TEs. I just cant afford 6 of them. LOL

The reel that did it for me with 12# P-Line about 200+ yards was the Abu Garcia Record No. 60. I had pretty good fights with 7lbs. bonita, 30inch. WSB, Barracudas and countless calicos.

I think a Avet SX or Saltist 20 is a bit over kill for Calico fishing.

I'd go with a levelwind reel.
    300 TE maybe the best
    400 TE
    300e Curado
    200e7 Curado
    200e5 Curado
    Daiwa Coastal 153H
Daiwa Luna 203, 253, 300 are real sweet.
Those are my picks and i have them all.

I've also got a Abu Record 60 if your interested 75.00 its lioke new.
I never use it, toooo many rigs.

CTE 300, I've been using them for 4yrs now. Always have white izorline #30 spectra backing and run long top shots of #15-#20. I've fished #25 line on it before, going shallow water for big sheepheads and lings before with no problemo.
When going spectra backing, I personally prefer Izorline over some other brands like Power Pro, cause I find others lines are kinda sticky.

Yup the 300's definitely the answer especially if your comfortable with superlines. But an even better choice might be the Curado 300E or EJ if all your looking for is a Calico reel.

If you really want a utility reel to replace the Cardiff and your not interested in the Curado 300 choices then you might want to consider the Avet SX MC 5.3. It will do it all including inland freshwater swimbait fishing for either trophy bass or any of the larger inland species you may be interested in. Heck you could get 2 of 'em for the price of (1) 400TE! Don't fear the conventional, they cast swimbaits very easily. Took me 5 min., literally, to learn to use one!

I bought a 400TE first and later a 5.3 and have found myself using the 5.3 so much more the 400TE sits in a backup position collecting dust.

    Good luck with your selection.

I personally have the 300TE and the 400B. I only use my TE for Striper fishing and Calico. By far one of my favorite reels.
