Does it have to be a fishing related story? I have some fantastic ones for you that aren't quite about fishing.....Whoops, my bad. Just re-read Scotts note.

ok....I'm gonna start this one off....This is a story I was personally there to witness and has stuck with over the years as one of my favorites....

I was fishing abord the Toronado out of Pierpoint Sportfishing in Long Beach with a group of co-workers. The target of the day was Yellowtail and we got into a pretty nice bite. My buddy Brian hooks up to a nice fish..After a few solid runs, the fish takes off straight under the boat. Instantly he puts his rod tip in the water to avoid a line break...Brian is a short guy and he is fishing a short rod so he is literally hanging over the side to keep the line off the hull of the boat. The deckhand rushes over to assist and grabs the back of his pants as he is about to go swimming and he drops his rod in the water....He is DEVISTATED!!! Cursing like a mo-fo at the loss of his gear AND a quality fish. Moments later a guy fishing on the other side hooks up and as he is winding in his fish the deckhand notices his line is wrapped around...guess what....Brian's rod....!!!! The guy winds it in and the deckhand grabs the rod and untangles the rod from the line and then screams..."DUDE, YOU'RE FISH IS STILL ON!!!!" Brian grabbed his rod and sure enough, the fish was still there....He ended up landing the fish!!!!! I never would have believed it if I didn't see it with my own two eyes. Awesome ending to an unfortunate situation.

A friend and myself were trolling with Dodger/Crawler rigs for trout about 2 years ago. She said she had a bite on one of her rods and when I looked at her rod I told her that she did have a fish on. Right then I looked back to see if I needed to clear any lines and at that moment an Osprey surfaced with her Dodger in its talons. The RAPTOR took flight after a couple of wingbeats and proceeded to fly up past our port bow at a height of approximately 40' to 50.

She screamed out, "What should I do?", and I told her, "I don't know, I've never seen anything like this in my life, but whatever you do, don't let go of that rod!

Finally the RAPTOR decided that what it had clutched in its talons was not a real fish and it dropped the Dodger, complete with threaded crawler still dangling, back into the lake. We caught a lot of fish that day but the RAPTOR was the highlight of our entire weekend and since that time I always make sure to tell others whenever I spot any RAPTORS.

It has been 13 years and the marriage is over so I guess I can tell the story now! Many years ago, when I was still dating my ex-wife, I took her fishing in my boat for Salmon on the flats North of Ventura harbor, back when you could still fish for Salmon in California. She was a little uncomfortable on the ocean in a small boat so I had to take it easy on the throttle on the way there. Once we got to the area I set out a couple of rods to troll with. I didn't have any downriggers so I used trolling planes with a release when you get a strike. After about 1/2 hour of trolling my girlfriend says she has to go to the bathroom. Well, I only had a small boat with no head so I told her to go up to the bow with a 5 gallon bucket! I didn't have any TP either, but I had a roll of paper towels. She says OK and goes up to the bow. She begged me not to peek and I promised I wouldn't, so she goes about her business. A few minutes later, after she is done, her rod goes off and I am thinking she will feel better about the boat ride if she gets a fish. She reels in and I can tell there is definately something there, but it probably isn't very big. She finally gets it to color and we see just what she has caught. On the end of her line was the longest streamer of paper towel I have ever seen. We both I laughed so hard I almost pee'd my own pants. After several minutes we were able to talk about it and she made me promise to not tell anybody about it. I have only shared this with a select few up until now, but it is worth sharing in the hopes of winning a new Avet.

Punked on the Big Game 90

Those of you who know me can attest that I am known for being a practical joker on party boats, so when I announced a few years ago that I would chartermaster a 2 day Tuna trip for my company people didn't know quite what to expect and either did I.

I had 22 guys together in San Deigo for a tailgate in the big 3 parking lot. We were all extremely anxious to board the Big Game 90. We got all the gear down to the boat in carts and I went aboard to settle up the trip with Irv and Larry from BG 90.

When I finished paying and getting my bunk assignment, I went to gather everyone to load up when I noticed a gentleman with a Coast Guard uniform on looking through my bags. He asked me if I minded if he looked in my bag and of course I replied “No”. Imagine my surprise when I saw 2 lbs of neatly packaged and numbered green contraband stowed in my bag.

At this point the Coast Guard guy yells “Nobody move, I am calling in back up”. By now I am sweating profusely denying any knowledge of where the stuff came from, thinking my life as I know it is over and what the hell am I going to tell my wife and kids.

Then I had a brief moment of clarity and I realized that I was being played.

The Coast Guard was a hired actor by my boss and none other than Captain Mike Jewett planted the Oregano evidence in my bag when I was in the galley. Irv and Larry were in on it too.
Those bastards!

I GOT PUNKED~!

After I cleaned my shorts the trip got underway. We had a few more beers and laughs that night. The trip was a complete success with everyone catching fish and I even broke in my brand new purple Avet Pro EX30/2.
