News Las Cruces/Cerralvo Report

What's Up Guys,
I've gotten some great dope off of Jonathans and others reports, so I thought I'd better start giving back. I fished last week out of Las Cruces with some family and friends where we found solid yellowtail jigging on a real nice grade of fish from 30#-41#, as well as some variety. It was mostly myself and my dad and a good bro and his stepdad fishing out of our own panga. The weather was typical of April, with some greasy days followed by others where coromuel wind 'helmet' kept us from getting across. The yellows were definitely an early morning deal, with good fishing from grey light to about an hour or so after sunrise. All of our fish were caught on 6X Salas and Tady 4/0 jigs mostly in scrambled egg and blue and white. In addition to the yellows, we also caught barred pargo, huachinango, cabrilla and a few freight trains that were unstoppable. The coolest parts for me were seeing my old man almost get dragged over by a pissed yellow and the blank look of terror on my buddys stepdads face (a salmon guy who had never fished Baja) when that first yellow grabbed his jig and headed for the rocks. One fish that really stoked me was a bluefin trevally (omilu for da hawaiian cats) that I got while skip jigging a candy bar around some boilers on the back side of Cerralvo. On the days where the wind kept us from getting across we found a few roosters and toros to keep things interesting. We did see a few dodos and a couple of small marlin in the green 72-74 degree water, so the warm water transition might not be far off.

Some pics....

Nice report, looks like some good variety and a nice grade of fish. 30 and 40lb. yellowtail are alot of fun to pull on.

Hi Greg!

Thanks for the plug! Nice nice report. I was out yesterday and we definintely got hammered...and not the good kind! We had been getting yellows on the iron at north Cerralvo at the La Reyna light house rock so 4 of my boats were there yesterday pushing out in flat seas. It has been bumpy for a few days so we were relieved to get the glass finally.

Well, we set up for the drifts with mackerel and throwing iron about 50 yards south of the rock and out of nowhere the winds started steamrolling from the north. I mean...howling. Within 30 minutes we're in whitecaps. I was fine, but pretty miserable for the clients. I was soaked and salt encrusted in spots that I shouldn't have had salt. Clients got queasy which is highly unusual that ANYONE gets sick here so that gives you some indication of how rough it was. We tried to hang but everyone had to blast all the way back in a sideswell getting their teeth rattled almost two hours back into the bay. Just one of those "spring days." Today...everything flat calm, but I sent out my boats from Las Arenas instead of La Paz. We still got a few nice pargo and cabrilla and a few guys did hit some fish they couldn't stop...before the winds came up.

Cheers to ya!
Jonathan
