Tailhunter's May 20th LaPaz/LasArenas Report

VARIETY OF BITERS KEEP RODS BENT AROUND LA PAZ - NEW FISHING REGULATIONS TO DEVASTATE THE SEA OF CORTEZ!

It was a good and bad week around here. Fishing has been great for cabrilla, big roosters, jacks, pompano, yellowtail and other species, but in the bigger picture, a new law went into effect May 15th that has Baja up in arms with protests, demonstrations and threats of violence as new regulations allow commercial fishers to fish indiscriminately.
Read about it: http://tailhunter-international.com/fishreport.htm

And more here on this week's blog:

and how YOU can make a difference on this one.

That's my story!

Jonathan

I would like to know who in the U. S. A. is aligned with the backers of NOM- 029. We need to put pressure where we have some political clout.

On a good note Jill is looking full of color and very vibrant again down there fishing with you! And as the Mexican Government I think they've been drinking too much Tequila because they just shot themselves in the foot! They aren't concerned obviously about their economy it sounds like someone has lined their pockets with some green! And Sheldon was worried when I ate 1 Roosterfish! LOL!

Hi Guys!

Jill is very thrilled with the compliment, Joe. Yes. She is getting color and I'm trying to get her on the water as much as possible and exanding her fishing experiences. She's gotten her first rooster (released); first pargo (big); first jack crevalle (most thrilling as she got it throwing iron and got slammed!). She's a trooper and she's even gotten into getting up at 4:30 a.m. to get the fishermen out!

On another note, roosterfish generally tastes really bad. Lucky for them. Most of them get released.

However, if you do have to kill one or it dies, the smaller ones are actually very good. Related to yellowtail, the ones under say...5 pounds actually have pink/white meat that cooks up great. Once they get larger than that, the meat turns stringy red and sinewy and I've never found anyone who really enjoyed it.

As for the Shark Norma regulations, get on that website and take a few seconds to use that letter template! It's easy and with one click, it goes out to every single Mexican agency that can make a difference. The folks down here have literally declared war on this federal law that slipped in. Cabo has had several big demonstrations. The hotels, restaurant people, taxi drivers..everyone has banned together and the support from mainland Mexico to overthrow the law is growing. It's not just about the fishing, but also all the people who eck out a living based on the tourist and fishing dollars. Additionally, it's also about the welfare of the Sea of Cortez in general. As one local senator put it..."What happens when the whales migrate or the schools of porpoise come through? Are we going to put someone out there to tell them to swim around all the hooks?" Point well taken. The only thing I can guarantee is that if we do nothing, then nothing will get done. This is all about dollars. We have to show that tourist dollars are worth more than the dollars commercial interests will gain from the implementation of this law. YOUR dollars you guys spend down here count! So, give a hand, please and pass on that link to your buddies!

Thanks!
Jonathan
