Second day of carnage. That's all I can say about it. Piled everyone into the vans. Perhaps the group a little more somber this morning. Perhaps it was because they knew what to expect. Or perhaps it was because some of them never went to bed!!!
Either way...
Pushed the boats off the beach and according to most accounts, almost as soon as they got the bait and set up it was game on! One boat stopped after an hour and said they had 12 fish on and had to go find something else to do. Others who had switched to lighter line were into some of the fish for longer battles. The initial tuna attack seemed to take about 90 minutes then tapered. Some boats withdrew from the zone and went off to do other things. Some pulled off, but snaked back in when the area traffic was lower and the fish ready to chew again. Unfortunately, the needlefish were up on top, but by sticking on some light rubber core sinkers, it was fish on again and bendo rods.
I can't remember how said what and when, but some of the guys pulled off to chase roosters and said it was another free-for-all on the smaller pez gallo. Others went off into the rocks and tried their hand at trying to pull pargo out of the rocks with tales of big fish stripping them into the rocks and unable to stop the fish on heavy tackle. One boat trolled for wahoo and had one stuck but it came unbuttoned. East Coasters, Mike Alperin and Lee Cook continued their onslaught with ultra light spinning tackle taking numerous species from triggers, to roosters and trumpet fish to cabrilla. I think the two of them must've done about 20 species in the last few days.
I'll have to let Joey Horvath or Flipper Thompson tell you their story of their big sailfish, but you can see the results. Once again, Flipper took the JP with this beauty on 20 pound test. No doubt, Flipper has been in the zone. He has taken the JP two days in a row and last year got two of the JP's as well.
Tell ya what...we still have two more days of fishing and guys are already releasing fish, giving away fish and telling me their coolers are already full. Pressure if definitely off! However, we still roll for two more days!
The next two days it's a whole new ballgame. We fish everyone here out've La Paz instead of Las Arenas and everyone will be on super pangas and we launch from the beach in front of the hotel. Whereas tuna were the primary hot ticket the last two days, we're about to enter the dorado zone!!!
I"ll keep you posted. Hope the fish gods continue to ride with us. Tonite is a big big party night here in Mexico. It's Mexican Independence Day and it's like 3 days of mardi gras starting tonite.
Here's some more pictures...
More tomorrow! Best fishes!
