Fishing in Loreto 10/4-10-9

Well, the plan was to fish Mulege but I wasn't crazy about the town. I like to be on the beach not a stiny river so, back to Loreto we went. the fishing sucked, lots of wind and 6 to 8' swells, not fun in a panga! Found Jose Torres and made plans to fish the next day. We got up at 5 and drove down to his house. We went south and tried to make bait. Caught only 1 mac and some skippies which we fileted for bait. Trolled feathers nothing, trolled skippies and caught 6 dorado 2 of them were ok so we kept them. The rest we let go to grow up. The next day we went back to find the boat out of the water! "Too windy", Jose said. I wish he had of called, anyway I went back to the Oasis and back to bed! Next day we tried again for 1 small dorado and a torro, I wish Jose had of told me they weren't good to eat, I was thinking sushi, and I would have released it. It was just a big skip jack he said it was a blackfin yellowtail . That was it. Spent hours trolling for nothing. Went back to the marina and Bob (my boyfriend) offered to back the trailer down the ramp. Not good the brakes locked and into the marina went the truck. Wasn't funny at the time. Day 5 we decided to give it 1 more time . Fished out of the Oasis, oicked up a guy who netted bait for us and off we went north. I lost a big wahoo in the rocks, and 1 dorado didn't stick. After that nothing, we trolled for pargo, and corbella for hours by the shore. Zinggg all the time needle fish! That got old so,off into the ocean, it was insane! 8' swells, I admit I was scared but the captain said "no problema" ya right!. Well I had had enough and had to catch a plane, so I packed it in at 12 pm. This was not the right month to go. I was told the action starts the end of December. I had a good time anyway, always nice to be in Mexico.

The truck thing was classic, the owner and I are directing from the ponga in the water. Back more, more, stop, STOP! OMG! Jose said, "esta ne es bueno." Bob comes out bleeding from the window escape, and I am just in shock. Everyone was so upset, I wanted to laugh but it wasn't the right time.

Julie, I've been to Loreto many times (the first time being there, from late March through late May, in 1978). The fishing gets going in early to late April through the summer (depends on SST). Early on big Yellowtail and further into the summer Dorado and Billfish. I spent some time in Mulege in '78 and sounds to me like it hasn't changed at all. Sorry about the poor fishing, remember the rule in Loreto, 4 days calm, 4 days wind! Thats been pretty spot on for my trips down there!

fishing calendar

Hey - I'm sure you're aware of the baja fishing calendars (google "baja fishing calendar") but just in case not, here's one:

Baja Motion Tours - Baja Fishing Calendar

The real fishing starts late April or May. Better luck next time.
