Alaska Airlines Baggage Limit
Hey All -- Ive heard a lot of stories about traveling to baja with your rod cases. Some say there is a charge for long rod cases and some say there isn't. Does anyone have any first had experience with Alaska Airlines?
10foot and I will be traveling to La paz in July both with 8'5" foot rods, so I figure well have 9' rod cases.

I dont know about rods but, ive heard of people not able to bring there 50's and 80's onto planes because they could be used as a blugeoning device.

We brought rod cases last year to La Paz on Alaska Air that were about 8.5 and had no problems.

Here's the official word...
Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air - Sporting Equipment
Flew down yesterday and as usual, Alaska Air was pretty much hassle free.... I personally don't bring/use my big jig sticks down here(usually 7 footers or less) but not heard of any hassles in awhile. Give them a ring if you are not clear or worried about fees.

Hola,
It's Moogie.
Ya, I called Alaska to see if their policies have changed. They said no, although they didn't come right out and say that you won't be charged for a rod tube that's over 62". They say that Some sporting equipment may be checked in lieu of one piece of luggage, if packaged in a suitable container.
The way I read into that, they're saying if your rods are in a tube, your'e okay.
No one from GB got charged last September.
Alaska say's that they're an "angler friendly" airline.
Lot's of rod tubes go in their plane's bellies every year. It would be a shame if they started charging for tubes over 62", although I wouldn't be surprised if they did.
I wouldn't be surprised at anything the airlines do in the near future.
They whacked me for an extra $50 for my 4 pound over weight luggage. 50 pounds max is the rule.
We're goin' down in 17 days. If there's any changes, you'll see it here first.
Hey Allen, do you have any squid beaks?
Moog

Ya they are weird. I had a 8 1/2 foot rod tube they never even questioned and I don't believe that anyone else's was either. Now on the way home my cooler was at 50 with no problems but some people got dinged for 2 pounds over and others were not dinged till over 75 pounds. I think it depends on who you got and if they were having a good day or not. I just planed on paying extra and when I didn't was happy.

Hey Allan, be sure to weigh your bags at home like Moogie says 50 lb. MAX per bag. If your taking a cooler make it 48 qt so it doesn't measure oversize ( length + width + height= less than 62"). The cooler can't leak or it will be left behind so tape up the drain and use straps to keep it shut ( bring lots of zip lock bags for the fish ). The rod cases are normally free, but expect to pay extra so you wont be disappointed. When you pick up your fish at the hotel freezer to leave, weigh it. They had a scale at the Los Arcos Hotel. Remember 50 lbs. MAX ( 22.7 Kilos) ). Also, don't duct tape your cooler for the return flight until AFTER you have gone through the inspection at the airport. Just keep your Duct tape in your other checked bag and when they are done inspecting they will let you tape it up. Good luck and like Moogie says we will let everyone know how it goes in just 2 weeks.
And one more note.. Be respectful of the authorities especially at the airport, and you will have a GREAT time!
I CAN"T FREAKING WAIT!!!!!!!!
Kel
