Alaska Airlines Halting LAX-LaPaz 9-07-08
Just got word from Jonathan that effective September 7, 2008 Alaska Airlines will stop flying from Los Angeles to La Paz BCS. Horizon Air is supposed to pick up the route, but don't know how long it will take. I verified this at the Alaska website by attempting to book a flight down to La Paz after the 7th and it said no flights available any day of the week! Jonathan will post more info when he puts up his report. Will have to fly to Cabo now for the Boston Tea Party II.
If your booked with Jonathan, get hold of him ASAP

Man, that sucks. I can only guess that I made my plans at the right time, but it seems that with the costs of fuel, things are just going to get more difficult.

Our clients that are already booked with us from August 18th on through the end of the year should have already received an email telling you what we know and what our best guess is. We will keep all of our peeps/clients updated with info as we get it via email. Jonathan will cover this with updates for everyone else in the next report and on the boards, if not sooner.
This is a very fluid situation obviously... not as dire as the Aero Cal shutdown, but definitely a challange.
Muchas Alohas

Amigos:
Actually, perhaps a bit of light...seems like the paperwork has already been filed for Horizon and that Alaska seems to be intimating to some of our clients that Horizon will take over on time and the transition should be seemless. Fingers crossed.

Hey Kel, you know you're more than welcome to van on up to La Paz with us if need be.
Good friends, good company, a cooler full of Tecates, and the roadside road kill scenery makes for a nice ride.
On another note, since La Paz is the capital of Baja, I can't see the airlines cancelling flights there completely.
I think it will all work out.

ATTENTION ALL TAILHUNTER CLIENTS TRAVELING AFTER AUGUST 18TH, 2008
Well Amigos, this is the kind of newsflash we hate. It has just come to our attention that as of September 7th, 2008, Alaska Air will be discontinuing its service from Los Angeles to La Paz, Mexico. We have been told that this decision has something to do with the MD-80 planes that they are using for this route.
Pending U.S. and Mexican Government approval, Horizon Air will be assuming service previously flown by Alaska. As of now, there is no official time frame on this process, and they are not taking reservations.
If you are holding tickets with travel dates after September 7th, 2008, contact Alaska Airline immediately!! It took six months for Alaska Airlines to get approval for this route when Aero Cal service was halted in 2006. Since Horizon is a sister company under the Alaskan umbrella, the process could and should take less time. We hope.
To add insult to injury, we have just found out that Delta is temporarily suspending its service from Los Angeles to La Paz from August 18th, 2008 through October 1st, 2008. Aye Hijole!! From October 1st, 2008 through November 15th, 2008 Delta will be flying Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, Sunday. Effective November 15th, 2008 Delta is scheduled to fly Los Angeles to La Paz every day of the week except Thursdays.
For all our Tailhunters with vacation plans that are affected by this, we think it might be the best option to contact the airlines and book or rebook your trips ASAP, (as in now, today)!!
When word of this hits the streets, our options could diminish substantially. For the many of you, flying in and out of Cabo is a very viable option. Airfare is usually less expensive and your choices of carriers and airports that service SJD (San Jose Del Cabo) are huge. If you are already on Alaska, you should be able to switch tickets to Alaska flights going to Cabo. We can then shuttle you up to La Paz for $100.00 and up per person, round trip, depending on the number of people in your group.
Obviously this is unexpected news. These flights back and forth from the States were almost always filled to capacity. September and October are some of our busiest months with historically epic bites. We will and can figure this out. There is a persistent voice in my head saying no problems, just opportunities, right??
Today I am sending this information out only to our clients that have reservations with us after August 18th, 2008 so that you can hopefully have the most options and leeway with rescheduling or rearranging you plans if necessary. I will be addressing all this in our fishing report next week, so if the word isn’t on the street by then, it will be. Get a jump on your plans now.
This could be a very fluid deal…. or not. Email us. Let us know what we need to do to help.
Tight lines…
Jonathan and Jill

Joey, That a great plan................cabo is the party town for sure. The next day is a 4.5 hour trak North but well worth the drive. You pass alot of small towns and you can stop at little joints for a meal and beer. I had to back out this year............I'm sad but I'll be there in 2009.
