EPIRB

I don't plan to go much more than 25 miles offshore and am considering an EPIRB device... I know that I should get a 406Mz device but I see that the prices vary, most being pretty expensive.

Any thoughts on the need for this device? Any recommendations regarding specific makes/models?

Thanks

If you can aford one get one. The new units are actully cheaper than they have ever been and they can locate you to a few yards. There are really two signals, one for the satellite and one that pin points you. With your but in cold water minutes may mean life or death. If those guys who got swamped and drown earlier this year off the channel islands hand had an epirb they might still be with us. Next time your out throw a life vest in the water. Keep going for half an hour. Go back and try to find the vest even with a last GPS mark. That vest is you. I know an Eprib is on my shopping list. For now I plan to rent from boat US.

You with an EPIRB -

You without an EPIRB -

Any Questions ???

Seriously - What is your life worth ???

What is it worth for you to come home to Momma and the Kids if something were to happen ???

You spend tens of thousands of dollars (if not hundreds) on a boat, a couple more thousand on fishing gear so why not a few thousand more for the one thing that may very well save your life if ever needed.

Florida has seen a number of fishermen survive this past year because they had an EPIRB. Unfortunately we have also seen a few who did not make it and they did not have an EPIRB another had one but never had it registered and the signal went through a verifications process of phone calls etc.

Get one, Register it, Test It and lets hope to God you never have to use it.

I paid $1,200 for mine and hope I can say it was never used. I venture for 5-105 miles out. I cant be responsible for my crew with out one. It takes about 5 min to trace a registered signal and the US Navy is in route. I try to fish with Sinker as often as I go out, I consider him a dear friend and would never put him harms way with no outlet.

Way to go...hell after having my friend slam his boat against Ventura Harbor Jetty and I called for help on my cell ...which had to go through a few different agency's before I got the Harbor Patrol out I just picked up a 5 watt handheld VHF Radio for the yak!
