boat salvage yards???

Hey y'all,

Well I just got a 12' Inflatable with a brand new 1974 Johnson 9.9 on it (the motor has like 10 hrs on it). The only problem with 1974 is BRITLE plastic parts. The motor has ran well, but the coil cracked and was arcing on the block. I have a brand new coil on order which was luckily pretty inexpensive. The problem I have now is that I was leaking some fuel from the line out from the fuel pump. I took the fuel line off, and in the process broke off the nipple that holds the line. When I found out that a new fuel pump from sierra cost $60, I tried to glue the parts back together. Well that worked great till I pumped gas through it,(Locktit plastic adhesive does not hold up against gas). I might try silicone as this hold up against gas. Does anyone know of any local to So Cal Boat Salvage yards that I might be able to find a used fuel pump for this motor?

Thanks in advance!!
Aaron

fuel pump

I recommend getting the new fuel pump. If your a fair distance off shore the row back or the tow back is something to think about.

DEFINITELY NEW!!!!! when it comes to gas and boats make sure it is new and well worth the 60 bucks. Remember that the exhaust pipe runs out the bottom of the shaft and the water doesn't it comes out the back if fuel leaks down on that pipe or an arch from something and you are 2 feet from a bomb. Never mess with the gas lines get new.

Agreed new is best. My answer is take it to a responsible local outboard mechanic that handles that brand. Let them go through it. You'll be better off yeah it will cost between $100 to $200 but the motor will come out the other end reliable. A motor that old that hasn't been used is likely to have bad seals, tired plastic and congeled oil blockage.

The other thing, get a Jis 7 certified handheld VHF and a Captian Vessel Assist membership.

Cool, Thanks for the input guys. I'll order the new fuel pump.

Grantar, thanks for the input. And just so everyone knows, I took the motor to Pacific Marine to have a full service and new water pump. they were amazed how great the motor ran.

Thanks again for the great input on this site!!!!!
