well, with all the boat talk, help me pick..

I'm probably gonna have to wait about three months to get things together, but I am on the lookout for the next boat. I am gonna set a budget of 20k fo rmyself, and would like a few opinions. The word for the day for me is simplicity. I want a fishing machine. Something easy to tow with my Suburban. I am not concerned with any sleeping quarters, actually, I am leaning more towards a center console of some sort. wanting to be able to hit everything from Anacapa, to Cruz, to paddy hoppin down south. Any suggestions?...

I know the owner and he is extremely picky. This boat has to be seen to be fully appreciated. It's in Reseda, I believe.

That's pretty much the type of boat I'm looking for. If it's still available in a few months I'll call him up...

Yeah, that's a sweet one allright, but it's abit outta my price range.

What are your guy's thoughts on different brands, models? I would love a Radon, but I don't think I can afford one. My main concern is reliability and turn key.

When the time comes look hard and look seriously. Make sure you choose what you will actually use the most often (this was a tough decision for me). The boat will be yours so only has to make you happy not others, don't let someone talk you into something you don't want and don't be in such a hurry that you settle for less than you want.

Make a list of exactly what you want out of or in a boat:
Should store how many rods, how much gear, bait well, live well, fish box etc., how many passengers. Think hard about this list, do you want storage for a BBQ an area to sleep etc., etc., etc.

For sure sea trial the boat preferable on a less than perfect day and see if the boat broaches coming down swells. See how she rides in tough seas and what shakes loose or falls off.

Use a an inspector even if it is a small 20 foot boat as they will alert you to cracks in the transom and or other potential problems.

Remember a bad outboard can end up costing you 16k to replace. Do you want an outboard (2 or 4 stroke) or an IO (Diesel or gas) etc., etc. Make sure she will have the range you will need.

Don't overlook the electronics as they can add up quickly if you need to replace because they are outdated, will not work for you needs or do not come with the boat.

Make sure the trailer is in good shape as well and the breaks are functioning. Would suck to have a 20k dollar boat on the side of the road when it should be heading to the islands.

At 20K you can almost get into a new boat if you stay in the 20' area bare bones but then again you would be better off looking for a better make that is used or at least IMHO.

You have been around boats long enough to know. Use your best judgment, common sense and gut feelings.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST have them throw in their GPS numbers for their hot fishing spots heheehe

What Sinker said!

Put it all down on paper.

New electronics are expensive to buy & install properly and they find the fish just as good as the used ones.

A used boat has already lost its initial "drive it off the lot" depreciation

I know an excellent surveyor when the time comes.

I vote for a 4 stroke OB already on the boat.

i agree. That or twins

Im used to Radons and Wilsons. You can find then decently priced. It just depends if you want one thats all nice to take the family on or if you want one that is just a fishing machine that will get you thru any weather. Personally, i trust a 24' radon over any striper, trophy or any of those.
I've pushed wilson's in 40knts of wind up hill all the wall to santa cruz.

Theres a 25' CC Seaways over by Anacapa boat yard. (x-commerical lobster skiff) for $7000. Give em cash $5000 and put some work in it.

But anyways, i just dont trust anything other than Radon, Wilson, Andersons Seaways.

As much as I want a hardcore strictly fishing machine, wifey would kill me if it was an "ugly" boat, LOL. I like center consoles cause it's easier for me to drive standing up. I don't really want a cuddy cause I'd rather not deal with ANY maintanence on it. One thing I have to have is a walk around. I want to be able to fish 4 comfortably and without a walk around it'll get tough. I'll rarely have 4 on the boat, but it's just something I'd liek to be able to do. I really have some type of 22' on up center console in my head for now. I definitely want a newer 4 stroke. Electronics I can deal without caus ei can add them later, and I would rather pay for a better boat and add later, then pay for electronics up front. I want a boat I can hang on to for the next 10 years at least. I have a habit of buying and selling cars, boats, projects, etc, and the wife wants me to get something to keep this time.
