Catalina

Wow... as a newbie to boating, I finally took a day to make my first Catalina trip (made it out to Channel Islands about a month ago)... I was waiting for good swell/wind reports since my boat is only 20'.

Launched out of Sunset and THAT PARKING LOT IS JUST A MESS because of construction. Looks like it will be great when done, though. GPS took me directly to Avalon and trip over was fantastic... 25-30mph the whole way and 35 mph when it really glassed out about 7 miles from Catalina. Checked out the mooring gear (I can do that!), tooted around Avalon for a little & talked to the harbormaster who was in his boat (nice guy- helpful).

Trip back was kinda tough... small swells not a problem but the wind came up and seas were very choppy with whitecaps all over the place. 10-20mph all the way back. Of course, I got several "saltwater showers".

Dam I LOVE BOATING!!! Next time, I'll figure to stay over a couple of days and fish da heck out of that area!

Bradley happy boy!!!

Try Cabrillo

I'm pretty sure you and I have the same boat - Triumph 195CC. We may have sent a few emails back and forth a few months ago. I know you're down south, and it would mean having to deal with more traffic on the 405, but if you want the shortest/dryest route to the east end of Cat, try launching out of Cabrillo. I made about 8 trips last year from there, and most of the time (when the wind is coming out of the NW) you're coming back with the swells and chop behind you. I know exactly what you're talking about when you say "saltwater shower". The captain always gets it worst on our 195CC's. But I've picked good days (or just been lucky), and stayed pretty dry on my trips to Cat out of Cabrillo. If you ever want to buddy boat, let me know.
