PORT CANAVERAL - It's an eye-catcher.
The Navy's unusual-shaped, aluminum-hulled, wave-piercing catamaran is making a stopover in Brevard County.
The HSV-2 Swift arrived at the Air Force station next to Port Canaveral on Wednesday to load supplies headed to Guantanamo, Cuba.
"If Batman had a ship, this is what it would look like," said Navy Capt. Douglas Wied, as he showed off the ship Thursday, which sits high above the water.
Residents might catch a glimpse as it leaves the port sometime Saturday.
The Swift is in the middle of a six-month training mission with armed forces in Central America and the Caribbean.
The mission's aim is to share knowledge and expertise to counter terrorism, drug trafficking and to improve port security throughout the Caribbean.
First deployed almost four years ago, the Swift is 320 feet long. Jets push it through waves at speeds of up to 53 mph, more than fast enough to water-ski behind.
One deck holds two buildings for training rooms, similar to portable buildings used at some schools. Tanks and other heavy military vehicles can be loaded and unloaded easily. The ship also boasts a helicopter landing pad.
Trainers on the ship include personnel from the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, State Department and other military and governmental agencies.
"Our objective is to develop a persistent presence," said Wied, Task Group 40.9 commander.
The task group provides training to foreign militaries in small boat operation, professional noncommission officer development and combat medical training.
"We share our knowledge every day with our fellow sailors," Chief Petty Officer Floyd Flowers said. "It's enjoyable; the people are really friendly."
Senior Chief Petty Officer Marc Owins, who conducts leadership courses, said: "Everywhere we go we're well received."
The ship's unusual shape and speed also capture plenty of attention.
"They're kind of in awe," Wied said. "They're just fascinated by it."
