Who knows how to work on throttles?

Picked up the boat today so I went hooping....something is totally wrong with my throttle.......no reverse had neutral and a slow crawl forward after an hour pulling hoops. Then I tried to pull the throttle box off but couldn't get it off, then all of a sudden I have slow crawl forward at the neutral position, or full throttle forward at the reverse position........could use somebody's help on this one.

Well question is did it work before you took it in to have work done on it? Sounds like they messed it up and I would take it back to them. Throttles are simple for the most part as long as there are not kinks in the cable or the angle at which the inner line comes out at both ends isn't at such and angle that it causes the cable to bow or pinch. Make sure too that the throttle arm on the carb moves freely in other words take the cable off it and throttle up the arm by hand.

You will get it figured out. I agree taking it back is the easy way and if they messed it up they should fix it.

On the other hand it is nice to know how to do it and what tools you need. This way you can be properly prepared if it happens on the water again. Think what that would have been like coming back from the islands.

Nice to be able to do it yourself if need be. I'm still figuring out my new boat.

throtles are simple-looking at first then when you really look at em theres alot going on -but it is basicly 2 cables that work in unisen-you should have a nuetral lock position at the top foward movement of throttle should be fwd. and then it moves throttle cable after that--any ways if you took it in for a solinoid prob. thats easy generally-why the controls were tacken apart i dont know? but could your prob. be as simple as your gear shift cable be in your throttle cable carrier? if all the parts that guide your cables into your out board are not properly put in it will be screwed up-ive worked on evinrudes almost only but sold 5 or 7 mercs. too -the throtles cant be that different-another thing is depending on who worked on your boat id take it back like if chris russel did the work he will stand behind it- pm or call-i may have other ideas and i can call more experienced boat owners at any time for help.

I don't know anything about throttles, but it seems to me that if work was done to the motor (where the other end of the throttle cables are), it is likely that they got switched during the repair.

When I took cover off the motor and had my cousin throttle it I did see the cables moving okay...........will probably tow the boat back to Specialty Marine today.
