Getting out of kelp

OK, I'm gonna try to fish in kelp soon but I have a question. I'd like to drift into the kelp with my outboard prop out of the water. So, when I'm ready to get out of the kelp, how do I do it without getting hung up? Lower the motor and blast out at hi rpm? Lower the motor and creep out at low rpm?

Any suggestions appreciated... don't wanna have to call Vessel Assist!

just tear right through it! Its the fastest growing plant on the planet, im sure it will be just fine

When you get out of it, put it in reverse and rev it up to get the kelp off. Continue on your way. If you still can feel kelp on the prop, reverse it again.

Kelp can dull your props. I learned this the hard way a while back. I usually fish on the outside of the kelp or between them large patches of it and start your chumline so it drifts into it. You'll bring just about every creature out for dinner.

Yes Joey is right and on smaller engines it can break props, prop pins, bend drive shafts and starve the water from the motor and over heat. If you know your going to be getting into the kelp then pick up a cheepy throw anchor with some decent rope no chain. You can throw it out where you need to go and pull yourself out. If you loose the anchor no biggie. I use one of those grappling style anchors from Boatersworld they are cheep and no total loss if it gets stuck. Much better then running your motor through it.

Yes and no because that doesn't help with anything in the blades themselves and it doesn't take away from the shock when the prop hits the item be it net or rope seaweed etc. I think those are for inboard keel driven boats too. Not a bad idea but like a garbage disposal it is only for what you can't deal with some other way.

I never get the boat in the thick of it...like Joey805 I fish the edges or kelp lanes.
