| Mitch, that EBIRB uses the 121 mghz frequency, which is only a homing frequency, not a distress frequency. The USCG will not respond unless there is a 406mghz distress signal that accompanies it. The 121 mghz alone is just about useless. You need to get a 406 EPIRB that is gps enabled and has the 121 homing signal. The one pictured above is NO BUENO.
For the price, an ACR 406 PLB EPIRB w/GPS is hard to beat, and they can be had for less than 500. It's also compact, waterproof, submersible. It's a good choice and does not completely empty the wallet. It does not float, so it has to have it's own little floating case. It has a lanyard, so it can be latched to a survival suit. I have this unit on my boat along with survival suits.
