Well there is two ways to do it. One is to drill a hole through the bottom of the boat which is the best way I think it should be. Then there is shooting the signal through the hull which I think is what you are talking about. Depending on the hull you can just glue the transducer to the hull but you have to make sure it will shoot through the hull first. The other way which again is what you are describing is to put the transducer in a container of fluid that rests against the hull.

You can check the ability to get through the hull by cleaning thoroughly the area you want to put the transducer onto then use Vaseline on the hull an bottom of the transducer making sure there are no bubbles at all between them. Then check an see if you get a good signal back.

Best way to do this is to launch your boat and using the ducer over the side find some structure (unique looking) and anchor over it as best you can. using the above way to check it see if you get some structure on your head unit after holding the ducer to the bottom of the boat. If you do then you are good. If not they you might not have a solid hull and you will have to drill a hole through to get a good signal.

Then there are several ways to mount your transducer to the hull. Gluing with again no bubbles is the easiest but not necessarily the best to get a good signal. Another way is to cut the bottom out of a bucket or use a big enough piece of ABS pipe that can hold your ducer and some mineral oil or antifreeze (other liquids can be used to) then you have to make something to hold the ducer flat on the bottom of the boat and enclose the top so oil doesn't spill out and allow the wires to come out and ..... You can search the hull truth for ideas or other websites because there are hundreds of ways that people have come up with to do it this way.
