Will my boat sink?

I need to replace my bait tank pump. It gets its supply from a thru-hull fitting on my keel. The boat is currently in a slip. If i try to replace the pump while the boat is wet, do you think i'll start to get water pouring in from the fitting through the hose and into my bilge compartment? The length of hose from the fitting to the pump is about 2ft and i'm pretty sure it's still below the water line.

I'm picturing the cartoon where a bathtub floating in the water and the kid pulling the drain plug and the tub sinking........

I'm not sure if there are any check valves or anything in line What do you guys think? I'm thinking i should just get the boat on the trailer and do it then.....but it's such a pain to get the boat on the trailer.

as long as the pump itself is above the waterline, you should be fine. the water is only going to rise as high as the waterline. I'd loosen the clamps on the pump slowly just to be safe.

disclaimer...if your boat sinks, it's not my fault, ...

Ok is the pump sitting on the thruhull or is there a hose that comes off the thurhull then goes over to the pump? If there is a hose then you can pull it off and plug it with a piece of PVC pipe with a cap preglued onto the end (most of those hoses are 3/4 to 1"). If not then you will need to plug the thruhull from the bottom or pull the boat out.

Or be VERY VERY FAST and be able to deal with water coming in from the hole. I am surprised there isn't a sea cock to shut off the water. If you don't have a trailer you boat should work on mine let me know I can launch my boat and load yours up on it to do the repairs.

install the shut off..
Imagine this..your out at the islands..you have a hose failure..cant find it..water is filling up in the bilge..reach down, hit the valve..save the day..
fittings are much cheaper then your boat.

I would install a valve for sure.

It's dangerous not having one on there....

+1

besides, on the way back, without a shut of valve you end up running back a full tank of water for no reason.
