Water pump 150 johnny

hey all, was just prepping my ride to take it out for the first time since last year , and noticed the weep hole wasnt producing , is a water pump replacement something i need a mech to knock out , or is it fairly ez that even i could take care of it ?

just had the steering cable replaced and my TNT motor replaced 6mo ago.
im still in talks to get my arm and leg back from that one

just tired of the mech getting more out of my boat than i am

anyways im glad i caught it before i launched it

thanks

Easy fix as long as the bolts are not frozen on the lower unit.

one big plus about having a professional shop - that you trust - do the work for you:

they know how to spot problems in the shop before you get stranded in the middle of the ocean and 4+ hours from vessel assist assistance.

"what are these drops of water in the oil?"
"just stir it around, they'll go away"

Yes very true Wils. I am used to doing it myself, mainly because I don't trust anyone else to do it hehehe. You are right if a person isn't really knowledgeable in seeing these things a pro or simi-pro is a better way to go.

point taken , but thought it wouldnt hurt to get to know the boat better so i dont feel helpless when things go awry. usually if i can see it i can fix it , had to learn the hard way with my cars in the past cuz i was too poor to have someone else do it..
of course i leave the heavy stuff to the experts, im hardheaded but know my limits
iknow little things like gaskets or sealant might be missing or overlooked..
looks like i will have to jump on a moo moo cuz i have the itch bad..

thanks for the input guys. know any good shops for johnson OBs?
i think the person i been taking it to here gets real busy.. had to wait till the season was over last year to get in..

would be nice to take a class on this stuff

I dont know what year your engine is but I have a manuel for them that you can have if you need it. I think it's in the Fordosaures Truck.I'll go look now.
PM me or post up if you want it.

MJ.

I've just got to put in my two cents here...

Water pump does not have a weep hole... it should have a strong steady stream that is visible all times the motor is running, especially at good rpm.

If all you have seen is a weep, chances are some serious damage may already have been done due to overheating, depending on your particular engine.

The above would lead me to consider you should have an experienced person make your water pump repair. Everything is riding on it ! It's critical.

Engine failure at sea is perilous.
I've known many people who have lost boats due to engine failure.

If components are not fitted properly during re-assembly it is possible to do expensive damage when tightening bolts up.

If you do not wish to hire a pro, and maybe watch him do the job so you can learn,
ask a buddy with experience to help you with some beer while you do the work.

If you must go it alone, exercise caution, and never-seize all threads going back together. Test run before leaving the harbor.

Best
