Like the website, I am in Idaho and I am planning a trip up the inside passage in Alaska this summer. Have a 25ft Kingfisher. Spent some years Rock fishing out of Ventura CA, Channel Islands, lately been killing the kokanee, steelhead and looking forward to what could be a good Chinook run. But I really miss the ocean. Grew up in Ojai, Thousand Oaks, Ventura area, been in Idaho 18 years, make log furniture for a living. Brief Bio, look forward to sharing good info. Anyone done the inside passage?

Hey Randy, welcome. I've done some fishing in Alaska, some inside stuff (mostly Salmon) and some outside stuff (Halibut, Ling's & RF). Beautiful country up there, don't know if it is your first trip up there or not, but I'm sure you'll have a blast.

Thanks for the welcome and hospitality. Stringer this will be our first trip and I know It will be a blast, can't wait. Driving from here (ID) to Prince Rupert to launch, mostly fishing for halibut, ling, RF and some crab and shrimp. Any suggestions on location, rigs or how to get it home?
Thanks

I fished out of a lodge/outfitter, so they always handled the fish processing.
As far as halibut go if you're looking for any decemt sized ones you'll be fishing 300' to 400'. I'd suggest a 2 spd reel w/100# spectra, you're not casting so a short rod that you can lift well with. The most common rig for halibut is 200# dacron leader, a 3# weight on a reverse dropper loop with a 14/0 circle hook at the end, joined to the spectra via a big game swivel. Bait was always salmon parts/heads.
Ling and R/F: You'll find these together (predator/prey). The large Mogumbo grubs work well, and so have any typical bottom jig, they are not hard to catch. look for rocks and pinnacles, I'd probably use the same rods/reels that I brought for halibut.
I didn't see Salmon on your list so I wont elaborate on that, and I havent done any crabbing or shrimping.
I would look for a local fish processor. It's always a little more difficult to process your own catch away from home. If you do well you're going to want to get your fish cut and frozen to preserve freshness, I almost always vacuum seal mine.
Hope this helps any other questions feel free.
