Here's why ..........

According to today's regulators
and bureaucrats, those of us
who were kids in the 40's,
50's, 60's, or even maybe
the early 70's probably
shouldn't have survived.
Our baby cribs were covered
with bright colored lead-based paint.
We had no childproof lids
on medicine bottles, doors
or cabinets, ... and when we
rode our bikes, we had no helmets.
(Not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.)

As children, we would ride
in cars with no seatbelts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a pickup
truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the
garden hose and not from a bottle.
Horrors!
We ate cupcakes, bread and
butter, and drank soda pop >with sugar in it, but we were
never overweight because
we were always outside playing.

We shared one soft drink
with four friends, from one
bottle, and no one actually died from this.

We would spend hours building
our go-carts out of scraps
and then rode down the hill,
only to find out we forgot the brakes.

After running into the bushes
a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the
morning and play all day, as long as we were back
when the street lights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day.
NO CELL PHONES!!!!!
Unthinkable!

We did not have Playstations,
Nintendo 64, X-Boxes, no
video games at all, no 99
channels on cable, video
tape movies, surround
sound, personal cell phones! ,
personal computers, or Internet chat rooms.

We had friends!
We went outside and found them.
We played dodge ball, and
sometimes, the ball would really hurt.

We fell out of trees, got
cut and broke bones and
teeth, and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.
They were accidents.
No one was to blame but us.
Remember accidents?

We had fights and punched
each other and got black
and blue and learned to get over it.
We made up games with
sticks and tennis balls and
ate worms, and although we
were told it would happen,
we did not put out very many
eyes, nor did the worms
live inside us forever.

We rode bikes or walked to
a friend's home and knocked
on the door, or rang the
bell or just walked in and talked to them.
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

Some students weren't as smart as others,
so they failed a grade and were
held back to repeat the same grade.
Tests were not adjusted for any reason.

Our actions were our own.
Consequences were expected.

The idea of a parent bailing us out
if we broke a law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law.
Imagine that!

This generation has produced
some of the best risk-takers
and problem solvers and inventors, ever.

The past 50 years have
been an explosion of
innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure,
success and responsibility,!
and we learned how to deal
with it all.

Sorry I thought this was good and at least would provoke some thought.

im only 27 but even I remember these days! and i have noticed all these changes and bring these same points up. i think its so sad that i remember playing with my neighbors till 7pm without the slightest worry that someone was going to take advantage of us 7yr olds! yet my own daughter, i cant let out of my sight for just a minute!i didnt even start talking on the phone till i was 13! for us, the turning point was the "night stalker" (circamid 80's). ever since his killing spree i havent seen kids playing outside in the street. he started the trend for those with these "urges" to go out and actually act upon them. it was like turning on a switch. that sudden

now its like a baren wasteland compared to when i grew up in that same neighborhood. and the only kids you ever see are kids walking home from school (the few that still do) in about a 30min window, then its ghost town again. its sad. so sad.

when my daughter around 7 yrs old and i see her spending most of her time inside the house, and knowing of only two actual friends who arent even in our neighborhood, i know it will bring a tear to my eye the second i realize and rememberwhat she's missing.

I don't think anyone needs to say anymore...I'm 48 and remember all those things well....they are gone now and traded in for drugs/money/sex/guns/theft/extortion/murder and a general lack of respect for anyone or anything - just look at your favorite fishing spot...

Get this, I'm only 20 but remember doing those things all the time. Playing hide and seek all day, making up baseball and kickball games, playing war with your hands as the guns always arguing whether or not you shot the other person, and pretty much playing sports every single day, riding bikes and exploring the neighborhoods for good hiding spots and the such. Nowadays, all my brother does is play video games from the time he gets home from school til night. No playing outside with the neighbors, no sports, and no exercise whatsoever. Whatever happened to making forts and stuff. This generation will probably be the lazy one. Even nowadays only a few of my friends wanna experience new things. If I wanna play video games I could go through most of the phone book and find someone to play video games with in a heartbeat. But finding someone to go fishing, or hiking, or travel with and only a couple people come to mind. I dunno if its just me but I'd much rather do something outdoors like traveling all over the place through national parks and learning about different regions and its history than playing video games. It's sad but the only place I've ever seen where kids were always outside doing the things we did as kids was in the ghettos and projects of New Orleans, Louisiana. Maybe because their parents couldn't afford such entertainment but I'll telll you what, the kids in these ghettos and projects always had a smile on their face and always seamed to be having more fun than the kids in the rich parts of town. Not to mention the difference in attitudes. This was one of the reasons why when working in New Orleans, I would much rather work in the ghettoes than in the rich neighborhoods.
