Time: 6:00 AM till 1:30 PM

Location: ARCO Island & Oil Piers Beach

Conditions:
Overcast, medium surf, medium current, water clear

Tide:
Low Tide -1.7’ at 6:36 AM, High Tide 3.5 at 1:33 PM

Set Up:
Rod - 7‘ Shakespeare Ugly Stik Intercoastal with Shimano Stadic 4000FB Reel and 8lb test P-Line – Used Big Hammer swim baits both 3” and 4”, Scent - Procure Anchovy Oil

Catch:
1 Calico (short) and 1 Halibut (short 18”) both fish released

Comments: Well, decided to take my new Kayak (Malibu Explorer Pro) out and see if I could get out to Arco Island from the old Oil Piers beach. With the tide being so low, there was almost no surf to speak of, so getting out was a piece of cake. Paddled out to the island and just basically explored the protected side (pier side) and fished into the rocks/kelp with a 4” Big Hammer (Calico Hunter). I got a really nice hit and hook-up on a short Calico. It was the first one I’ve ever caught, so that was pretty cool. I threw the swim bait in various spots in this area for about an hour and a half, but only got the one fish. Swell started to come up a bit, so I decided to call it a day and head back to the beach. I got back to the beach, loaded the kayak and decided to do a little surf fishing along this stretch before I headed home. I worked my way down to the pedestrian under crossing (beach ended here). There was some ideal water and structure that I thought looked good and about the 2nd or 3rd cast I got hit hard by a nice little Halibut. But, it was a shorty (18”) so back it went. All in all it was a good day and felt good to catch something off the kayak.

Sorry, no pictures today. I’m not taking the digital on my kayak right now.

Thanks Blacklion,
You had better luck on that beach than I did last week, might have to check it out again since you got that shorty.
I have a feeling there are better days to come for you on that kayak

Congrats on the yak Marv! I just hope this adds to your fish reports and doesn't take away from your surf reports. Now you can launch from Malibu and Go looking for the threshers!

Cool Marv, glad you made it out on the Yak. Like we talked about, I'd really like to give that a try sometime. From what you've said, it sounds like a blast!

Good job on the calico and flattie... thanks for the report.

Ps... lets see some pictures of your new yak setup!

Marvin, way to go on the Calico and the Flattie! I'm glad you got some action on your Yak. Hopefully you will be posting many more reports of some great action on it.

Wow, Blacklion has gon yak style! Right on! Looking forward to some killer reports Marvin. Congrats on the new toy.

I second about what Batty says regarding the threshers at malibu. Those would be a blast to catch.

The ocean side of that little island is where I have nailed all but one of my Salmon and they were all in pretty tight to the rocks of the island at that - do a little mooching.

There are definitely legal Calico's out there as well as I had a buddy who worked out there and would call us when ever he had the shift by himself or when he was in charge and would let us fish the island.Only problem was you had to be ready to drop what you were doing and goon 10 minutes notice but the fishing was worth it.

Marvin now has a kayak? Outstanding, and the hits just keep coming from this man.
