Time: 5:30 AM till 2:00 PM

Location: Haskell’s Beach (Goleta, CA)

Conditions:
Sunny, moderate surf, little current, water clear

Tide:
High Tide 3.4’ at 4:11 AM, Low Tide 1.2 at 10:15 AM

Set Up:
Rod - 7‘ Shakespeare Ugly Stik Intercoastal with Shimano Stadic 4000FB Reel and 8lb test P-Line – Used Big Hammer swim baits both 3” and 4”, Scent - Procure Anchovy Oil

Catch:
1 Halibut (short about 14”) and 1 White Sea bass (short about 20-21“) both fish released

Comments: Well I took my kayak up to Haskell’s Beach in Goleta and launched just after first light. I got out past the surf line and worked my way west toward the pier and just tried to get a feel for it. The swell was moving the kayak pretty quickly so broke out the anchor and that did the trick as I was able to stay in an area and work it more. Anyhow, not too much after this I’m just retrieving my 3” Big Hammer (Larry Heron Special) kind of slowly and at about 10-15 feet out from the kayak I see this flash just nail the swim bait and my rod just goes BENT!. I could see that it wasn’t a halibut, but at first I just couldn’t get a good look as it was trying to go deep, taking a little line. I’m just trying to keep the dang fish from taking me under the kayak, but now that I think about it, that’s no big deal on a kayak. Anyhow, I just let the fish do it’s thing for a minute or so and it finally tired out and came up. It was a juvenile WSB and still had the vertical dark bars on each side. It was pretty cool. Well I worked over to the west side of the pier, got a couple of good hits, but no hookups. Finally came back over to the area where I got the WSB and managed to catch a short halibut. There were 5 guys in float tubes and 1 other kayak out there and all I know of were 3 other halibut (all shorts) and 3 calicos. All I can say is I had a lot of fun and gained a little more experience and maybe next time we’ll get a few more.

Here is a picture of the short WSB,

Here are a couple pictures of the kayak that you all asked for last time,

Marvin that is just AWESOME. I think it is wonderful how you continue to try new methods of fishing and have stuck with the artificials so well. Seems that is about all I fish with now inshore anyway.

The pic of that Seabass is beautiful. Speaking of dumping a kayak - I am sure you have already figured it out or know but here goes -
<UL>
<LI>Dry Bags for all your important stuff (Camera / Wallet / Cellular - and of course the Get Bent Sportfishing Business Invitation cards)</LI>
<LI>Ties lanyards for all your gear - in case it turns nothing is lost just pull them up and then go home and do that cleaning thing - yuk</LI>
<LI>Float on Anchor Line - Never know when that Thresher is gonna come and take you for a ride (I have known guys who were dragged for two miles). Just slip of the anchor line and go. After catch come back and grab the float and pull up your anchor - nothing lost - you have the fish and the anchor.</LI>[/list]

I am sure Arvin has a bunch of helpful hints as well.

Marvin again, another wonderful report with great pics and a true inspiration (to me at least) - looking forward to getting back and wetting a line with you for sure.

Way to go Marvin! You always seem to get into quality fish, and it is not luck either. You are in a class by yourself. Great pics too buddy, of both the fish and the kayak!

Marvin,

You gotta let me know the details on how to get into a Yak rig. The initial set up and all.

Thanks much,
