as some of you already know by reading the other boards that i post on, i fished the first annual kayak fishing classic yesterday (9-27-03). turned out to be a great day.

started out pretty foggy but not cold. about 65 kayaks were lined up at the beach in mariner's cove.

there was a whole lot of great food and drinks for all the contestants. this tournament was WELL put together.

then the top ten were called up. that's me in the middle with the "hang loose"

then it was down to the top five and the prizes for each. there were some great prizes handed out for them like that awesome griller/smoker/bbq, a boga grip, a shimano rod with a new AVET SX reel, and a tackle bag full of goodies.

it was between me and pete weintraub (an awesome fisherman). they announced that the second placer got 8.3 pounds of bass (for top five fish weighed) and i was sure i had only gotten second place. when they called pete's name out i was in shock. the last man standing.

my prize was a brand spankin new (newly designed just for fishing) ocean kayak Prowler with an awesome (expensive) surf to summit seat, light weight aluminum two piece paddle, two removeable rocket launchers with bunjee tethers, some tackle boxes, and a set of wheels to make a cart with. all in all this package is worth about $1200!

but i wasnt the only winner...

my friend chris baugh, a former non-kayak owner won the other kayak in the raffle. a newly redesigned ocean kayak drifter.

over 200 lbs of fish were WEIGHED. many more were caught. the details about the tournaments can be found at www.plasticnavy.com and links to all the pics (over 250 pics) and information about the tourney and its sponsors are there as well.

THIS WAS A CATCH AND RELEASE TOURNAMENT.fish were kept alive and released in good condition after weighing. the only type of fishing tournament there should be.

Good job and nice pictures..

Qeustion, do kayaks have live wells or something? Or are the fish weighed on the water and then released?

What a great report! Thanks for posting it.

How did you keep the fish alive? You must have a live well on the yak, huh?

i used my bait tank for keeping them alive. it consists of a 5 gallon bucket, a small 7a/h 12V battery, a bilge pump, and some hoses and wires. other people used the floating catch basket that you can get at walmart for about $7. i have one of those also, but i dont use it anymore because it acts like a sea anchor and its a pain to pull inevey timei need to paddle away.

the tank well in the prowler is just awesome. it's rectangular so i can get a plastic container from walmart to fit right into it for about $5 and use the same system for the water exchange. the tank well in my tourer is designed for holding O2 tanks for divers.

kayak fishing has come a looong way. kayaks have long been designed for camping, diving, exercise, etc. and you would have to improvise soooo much to make your kayak work for you. now that we've made such an impact on the fishing industry, the kayak manufacturers are havingmore and more kayaks designed for kayakfishers by kayakfishers. its just awesome!

Went to plasticnavy.com, and watched most of the slide show about the tourney. Maybe I could afford a new kayak if I was able to sell one of my kids!
