Yes,just like a good woman they will require some TLC ,more than any other reel but there worth it!.if u go fishing and wash ur reels a few days later there not fer you!.
why spend 70 buck on a penn 506 when you can pay 30 bucks more and get a newell 322 its same and width lighter and better casting..........
I have 2 agree with c3po,id rather fish a newell before penn its lighter, better built, and will cast better, and will take a beating.I have eighties era P-series newells i will never get rid of.
I am not a Newell girl, never have been...Apparently you have never fished with a 506HS...You would know why I love them if you did...Try one sometime...Next time we fish, we will trade foer a while and compare!!!

i`m a old dude i fished with penns before there were newell reels.back in da day we put newell kits on our penn squiders.jigmasters,4/0.etc and we thought they were the shit.then came the old daiwa sealine series of reels 30H.50H etc.and then the Newell blackies! i remember buying my first 229 from andrews sporting goods {now turners}in reseda.and yes i`v used 505.506 just sold a accurate 505 a couple months back.

Reason: speeling
I hear you on easy maintenance part. I've got a pair of narrowed penn 500's and primarily use them on my yak. If they get dunked or fall in the sand, no sweat as they can be taken apart, cleaned out, and will work like a champ.
Does anyone know if you can get a conversion kit to make a 501 a 506HS...I see the conversion kits for 505 to the 506, but 501's are much more abundant....
