I think Joe's right. Also, if $ is the prime motivator then it's probably best that he stay away from military service, and it's best to come to that conclusion now rather than later when you've made it through basic training and find yourself deployed half a world away.

I like unclesurf's sage words of advice - very practical - the kind of advice I'd give my kid, but it also sounds as if the kid is really pumped on his new job and you are young enough to give it a good go to see if it's gonna work...

If we were all about harsh reality on this board, trip planning threads would go a bit more like this:

"you know, catalina really isn't producing, probably shouldn't go, the weather's gonna suck, the lings are all short, yellowtail tastes gamey, might have boat problems...."

I had a college roommate who dropped his studies two years into it and got a job selling Xerox machines. no base, only the golden handshake and wink.

Two years later, he bought the oceanfront condo we were renting in Ocean Beach, kicked us out and remodelled it into a lady slaying bachelor pad - he now rents that out and upgraded to a "cottage" at WindanSea beach.....

I also have a friend who dragged themselve out of the gutter, got on methadone, quit the ICE and special K and is now getting her PhD at MIT - (she's hot too )

go for it kid!

Dude a 72 hour work week? I couldn't do that, not enough fishing time...hahahah

I agree with Danimal....you're young go for it...

My only advice...don't go out spending a boat load of cash...save most of it....

i understand why some of you doubt me, and personally when i got the job offer, i was skeptical too. but the fact that i was pretty much just handed a very promising career at only 18 was just too much for me to pass up. i hope to see you guys on the water anyways, or maybe at the oceanside pier tommorow. i actually get a day off for once. no way am i gonna waste it indoors. i hope to god it doesnt rain too bad, otherwise i might have to cancel =( well, for all of you who put faith in me, thank you. it encourages me to keep doing what im doing.

Hell even if you only pull off 1/3 of that pay it would still be nice. Good luck man.

good luck on your venture brotha. Im going the "odd way out" and going to a 4 year University once I graduate high school in June. Ill probably be attending Channel Islands in Camarillo because of the education and location. I also got accepted to the 2 Cal Poly's, CSU Northridge, San Diego State and CSU San Marcos, but im a family guy, i cant be too far from my Fam in Ventura County. Once I get out with a B.S/Masters in Business Management I can only hope to make half of what you are projected to make, and ill be 21-24 when I get out...
