Travel with Teramar or buy a 2-piece?

Hi Everyone,
I have a 7'6" teramar that I really like and I will be travelling to Mexico in a month or so. I'm just going out on one of the small local boats for small stuff, I don't have the $$$ right now for a real charter. I've never taken a plane with a pole before so I'm wondering if it is too much of a hassle to bring this pole, should I just rent one there or buy a 2-piece pole?? I have a tube for it already and the United website seems to say it is free to bring the pole in place of a luggage if it less than 109". The only other problem I can think of is the rental car...They have us in a compact Nissan which may not fly anyway because I have my wife and 2 kids with all their bags.

Any travel help or experiences appreciated...

Well I answered my own question...Called United and asked if there would be a charge for the pole on an international flight because the website may no mention of international rules on oversize. Lady answers and says "Yes it's going to be like about $50". OK, call United back get a different agent who actually looks up the flight and checks the rules and it would be $100 EACH WAY...'Nuff said

Brook,
If you would've looked at the Baja Forum and read the archives fom Get Bent Gone Wild trips there is a bunch of info on bringing your rod tubes....on Air Mexico we didn't get charged for over size.

Thanks, My wife booked the trip through an agent, I'm not sure if Air Mexico flies from the Bay Area, but next time I will look for them.
I've been eyeballing the St. Croix travel rods, but looks like the Salt Striker or Offshore Angler travel setup is more in the budget.

Brook, remember that the 106" measurement is a combined measurement of length plus width or girth on rod tubes. So that really shortens things. Just be prepared to pay some extra bucks for your rod tube! Alaska Air NORMALLY doesn't charge extra for rod tubes in that length. So next time book with the Airlines that don't charge extra. I'll let you know shortly, with the high fuel prices if Alaska has started charging extra. (this coming weekend). Just a side note, none of the normal travel insurance companies (AIG and others) will insure a flight on AeroMexico, since 2006. Just a heads up.

Yes seems like the airlines are really scratching for money so it seems like it would be a good time to invest in a decent travel rod. Combine that with the fact that salmon season here is gone for the foreseeable future it looks like I'm going to need to travel to get my fix. This will be my first time for anything other than salmon, who knows, if I have enough fun I may try to get on the 2008 Get Bent Gone Wild
