I wouldn't say leopards are endangered but they are kind of hard to come by.Slow growing and late to mate the species could get hammered easy. Right now they are mating or having young. They have a 10 to 12 month gestation period that ends around April to June. so in a few months they will be better to keep but right now you could get a mommy and you don't want to keep a preger female unless it's by mistake.

They are fantastic eating fish and just as much of a pain to clean as any other shark. I think BBQ-ed it is one of the best fish. Just like halibut to me but better texture.

I understand that the leopards in question were in spawning mode. that is the most important time to release any fish, shark, etc. Unless, of course, you dont want to catch their offspring.

and some of us just flat out dont need an excuse as to why we release the rest of our fish, sharks, etc when we do.

and if'n ya'll dont believe moi,
just ask jwoodman about my lobster gauge.

I agree with carni and creekster,
first, If you want to know how they taste keep one ant try it. yummy stuff
Second, If you do hook a mommy and choose to keep her, clean her, You may feel guilty like I did.
I hood a 3 footer in Marina Del Ray a few years back, cleaned it out and found two rows of eggs. I FELT LIKE POOP! Thank god she didn't have pups. That would have been bad.
