I have a couple of thoughts about this. . .

First. . . I was always taught that "if you don't ask, you don't get". It never hurts to ask, but when you get an answer that you may not care for, it doesn't mean that you should respond in a sarcastic manner.

Second. . . when it comes to something like hot fishing spots and/or GPS numbers etc, I wouldn't give them out to strangers like candy on Halloween however, I would give them out to my friends.

I would be diplomatic to a stranger, being kind enough to offer some well known spots/numbers, publications, web sites, and other forums to assist the newcomer in getting positive information.

I agree with the idea that the newcomer must understand, that he should be bound by a proper attitude.

Where's the squid beaks?

Good fishing spots are hard to come by. They take a lot of hard work and time on the water to build up a good list. I wouldn't just give them away to a newbie, but good friends will trade hot spots and I have given away some of my best spots on occasion.

We have very little structure here so numbers are tough to come by. I have friends who give me all their numbers and if I have any they don't I give to them. On weekends we either stay away from unpublished numbers or ensure no other boats are in site as they will Radar Mark you as well out here in a heart beat.

Being still fairly new out here my numbers book is not huge but growing everyday, some the hard way and some from friends. If I got asked by a new guy or a stranger my answer would be grab a Top Spots Map or something similar for out there.
Sinker is right, newbies you direct to general areas and what to look for, or published #'s... everyone should have to pay their dues and learn..

To show a perfect example I had a spot in TampaBay that I got from my grandfather that was good for a couple of Gag Grouper or big Mangrove Snapper any day from October to May... I met a guy off of Fla Sportsman Forum and let him buddy up... I took him to the general area and showed him how to troll for the gag's and mangrove snapper and went on my way to the sweet spot... next thing I know he is doing a "Man over Board" on my best spot.....he and his buds cleaned it out in a month and until I moved here it was never the same...The spot was great 30 minutes from the house 2 passes max and you had fresh fish like these...Never again...

Funny as these replies maybe......no sportmanship there. I enjoy teaching and learning the game of fishing. Long as someone has a good attitude..why not help?
Right on Mitch. We all have been there once, and for sure I've been accused of givin away spots in my lifetime. Just makes me look for more, with a little more diligence.

I agree with some of your comments. I once was a new saltwater fisherman (like 2 weeks ago LOL!) and thanks to people like Mitch, have learned enough to be on my own and catch a fish here and there.

It does not hurt anyone to share some known spots. But even better, we can always advice on fishing techniques, times, areas (horse shoe, ask the bait barge guy, etc.). I like the idea of asking for a fishing trip in return for the favor

My two cents only.

Sharing is what fishing is about but I don't openly give away spots if I don't know a person!! It's one thing to ask to go fishing and get help, another to just ask for you hard earned spots. While there are very few "spots" left, we all have are go to honey holes and only share with our close friends!!

my fishin partner wont have anything to do with fishin sites cuz he thinks no one knows alot of his spots and thinks i give em away -its always a subject that sparks a little chit on our trips .told him that it dont go down that way and everyone here gots there spots too! but he dont believe any other way! its his loss not to be a part of this brotherhood in my opinion.i give newbies the above posted info on structure-yeah there lots a times i wanna ask where people on this site hooked up exactly but i dont -just dont feel comfortable askin and some spots are daily-some last a while too-but outta respect to my buddy i dont go into details where we hooked up and most all of you guys are saltyer than hell more than me anyways!I look up to all you guys for info. and expierience and my questions and im happy with that .
