Pedicting the weather 2 days in advance in the San Nicholas area is all but impossible, especially if you are looking for an open window of opprotunity. Also, the wind pattern at SBI is generally completely different than it is at San Nicholas. The wind lane that comes off of Point Conception usually covers San Nicholas island during prevailing conditions. SBI is usually outside that wind lane, and is fishable and navigable a much higher precentage of the time than San Nic is. Whomever is running the PD will know whether or not San Nic is doable, and he'll probably be making that decision while underway unless there is a very weak onshore flow. If the flow is very weak, you can plan ahead. If it's anything more, you just have to see what the current conditions are. The South Santa Rosa Island bouy, which is located near the 311 will generally give a very good indication of what is happening out at San Nicholas. The Tanner Bank bouy is also in that wind lane most of the time, but is not quite as reliable as the bouy on the 311. If it's howling at both bouys, then you can guarantee that San Nic is blown out. Generally it's kinda snotty at San Nic. SBI is almost always doable.
