Irons just happen to be the choice the YT wanted to bite at the time for Carni and Jomama. Personally I would use the hook and egg no swivel AND have an iron setup waiting just in case the fish dont want live bait. dont get caught off guard. If you STILL cant make up ur mind have 3 setups, Iron, swivel, and no swivel.
What can you loose?

I'm always ready with all of the standards. Dropper loop rig with appropriate weight to get, and stay on the bottom. Iron, I like blue and white, always in the rack. Unless you are using a different leader, dump the swival idea. Sliding egg sinker rig either to the hook or Carolina keeper about 3 feet up. I've had success with all these with WSB, Yellows and Halibut. They work with sardines, anchovies and squid. Don't get hung up on hook size. Match hook to bait size. It will differ each trip. I've also seen success on Yellows with lead head with squid, live or fresh dead. Good luck.

Too much bro
match your hook to your bait and let er rip. No hardware
If using candy as bait 1/4oz to 3/4 oz slider good to go.
Good luck

Go old school. Match the bait hook to the size of the bait. Generally a #1. Nothing else. If you want it to sink, just use a rubber core sinker, no dropper loop stuff as you may have to change the set-up fast. Go as light a weight (1/4 oz. to 1 oz.) as the current will allow and work the water column with a slow drop. Feed out the line but keep your thumb tight on the spool as the hit will be hard and surprising, and you don't need a backlash! Hit the brakes on him and he'll set the hook himself. Then your off to the races.

The biggest obstacle to landing a yellow is finding one.

I have the luxery of owning a boat and I can fish several rods at a time thereby employing different methods. I always send down a dropper loop with either a greenback or squid, depending on the time of year. In addition, I will flyline a bait with a flouro leader and possibly a sliding egg sinker if necessary.

One thing about fishing both greenbacks and squid is you can soak both for quite a while and still be effective.

Good luck!

I have seen Yellows caught in so many different ways that I don't think you could select one way as the best way...Hell I've hooked them on a tiny strip of squid on a long dropperloop while fishing for Whitefish.... The good 'ol dropper-loop has never failed me...Everytime I try some new fancy crap I end up right back where I started...Maybe it's just my comfort zone....

Flourocarbon has always been one of those things that some people swear by and others believe is a gimic including me. Then I get on a boat where the guys with Flouro just railed 'em all day, sometimes 3 to 1 ratio, over straight mono....I had to give it a try and now I'm a believer..I use it all the time....

I do say ditch all the swivels and crap...Me and Flipper argue that point all the time with his "ball-bearing swivels".....I say that every knot you tie is a potential breaking point so keep them to a minimum...and definitely don't even consider hook size until you know what the bait looks like...I have caught 40 pound Albies on a #4 hook fishing teeny ass chovies....

Pound for pound though....Yellows kick some serious ass and are my favorite to fight...

Holy Crap...did you see the fish counts for Port Hueneme today....YELLOWS BABY!!!!!!! Let's go get some instead of talkin' about it.....

try to get a big strong live bait, keep tossing them and if they don't swim off away from the boat fast, get another fresh hot bait, tell the deckhand to get me some fresh hot bait, and if i get a yellowtail you will have a really happy guy that will love to get you a really gret appreciation when we pay up our boat tabs $$$$ Just don't settle for skimpy or wimpy, be really dedicated to getting that 1st oner, these are what make the accomplishments worthwhile. remember: "The end justifies the means!!!"""
