Might be interested but have a question. Why launch from CI? I know there is a reason but was thinking for running south and launching from there.

Excellent question. The distance to Pyramid Head from CIH is 89 NM. The distance from Mission Bay to Pyramid head is 58 NM. The distance to Cortez Bank from CIH or MB is basically 100 miles. So, why would I want to spend the 100 bucks in diesel towing the boat South, only to run about the same amount of mileage on the water, and not have a place to top off my fuel tanks? See, if you run from CIH, you top off at Avalon, and only have 30 miles further to get to Pyramid Head. So you'll be starting from Pyramid Head with basically a full fuel tank. Granted, you are going out of your way about 30 miles to top off at Avalon, but the trade off is worth it. Pyramid Head is close to the 60, Cortez, West Butterfly, 381, 43, Tanner. It's a nice spot to hold up for a night or 2.
Did you read the part where Cortez bank is almost the same mileage from Mission Bay or CIH? It's a hard concept for lot's of the Ventura County boaters to understand. We have a bunch of sporties here that think the edge of the earth is SBI or Rosa and Miguel, yet sporties out of SD think nothing of running what is basically the same mileage when headed to the outside. The main difference is that the guys up here don't fish Tuna or the other pelagics, as the Channel Islands keep folks happy with WSB and Rockfish. I'd do the same thing if I were a sportie operator, as I could turn a higher profit fishing local.
If a guy wants to fish the spots local to SD or South and East into Mexican waters, it makes sense to tow down. If you want to be on the outside, then it makes no sense to pay for fuel for your truck and deal with the hassle of I-5. My boats overall length is 29'8" and about 8,000 lbs fully loaded and wet. NOT a joy to tow.
