| Hey do you guys like eating pacific bonito???
I met a guy this morning who said that bonito is a really bloody fish. He said it wasn't real good eating, but i thought the guys who catch them ont he open party boats eat them Let me know cause i don't know if they are good or not.

| I have never eated one but people say if you bleed them right away and ice them they are an O.K fish to eat

We had this conversation about two weeks ago. I think they taste pretty good, but some folks, (e.g. Flipper), think I'm nuts. The trick is to bleed them or fillet them right away, and cook them when they're fresh. Also, be sure to cut out the dark portions of the meat.
They're great baked or smoked. I have a freezer full of them right now. | |

yeah If you do not bleed or fillet the fish quickly the fish will get mushy[img]smileys/smiley11.gif[/img]

plan on eating a mack, but i stand by my statement. bonito is good!
hahaha. so is skipjack, even though u like to waste it on bug bait

| Bonito he go,Aku(Skipjack)is one of the best eating fish around,Especially the big ones(25-30lbs),Ice them good right off the gaff,hold them in brine and ice couple days,cut them and MAN!! That's some good sashimi!!
There's a demand for 10,000 lbs of Aku a day in Honolulu.
Amigo is right,Gotta bleed and ice Bonito right away or it comes mushy,We have a similar fish called Kawakawa,Same drill,They come mushy fast cause real oily,Mackeral is the same,I can't handle "saba"(Japanese Mackeral) in the sushi bars,Too strong!!

I bet with the proper care they are an OK eating fish at best.... bleed, clean, iced quickly, cut out blood line, and a HEAVY milk bath. But I never catch any of size worth keeping to eat... just bait size.
Although Ive never had Bonito, I LOVE cuda! And lots of people think I'm strange for eating them. But with the proper care, they are an excellent eating fish. So maybe they are good? [img]smileys/smiley45.gif[/img] | |
