Desperate to get out in the ocean for once, I decided to slip into the small window of time when the wind shifted from East to West today. The wind was howling at 30 mph when we left Camarillo and was still a bit windy when we reached Leo. However, as predicted, the wind died just as we launched.
Conditions were great: small waves, little wind, and clear water. We metered fish all over, and saw a few swimming around, but none would hook up. Maybe it was the low tide or cold water-not sure but it was good to be out there. A gray whale surfaced and gave us a scare.
After peddling around the surfing area, we made our way over to Nicholas Canyon for nothing. We had our standard visit from the DFG, but in a non-standard way. They approached us on paddleboards and identified themselves as the DFG, but they sure didn't look like the DFG. No badge, no sidearm, no radios, no uniform...Heck, WE looked more official then THEY did! He did point out that he had on a DFG hat, so OK, I guess that counts. Anyway, they were very professional and checked my license and hold. He did visit us again later when we landed, in full uniform with truck, so he definitely was legit. Very polite and friendly.
No luck today, but at least we made it past the wind.
Forecast was for 2" with an occasional 5" wave:
The lifeguard tower was manned today:
Here's their view of us:
It really was calm for a bit:
Now there's something you don't see every day - DFG Wardens on paddleboards!
