Me, Paul and Steve went out to pop the cherry on Steve's new banana colored kayak aka Chiquita. We have lots of pics, but only some of the good moments.
Got to the Lion's Cage and rigged our yak's up. Steve was very eager to launch so we let him go first. He went in a like an astronaut, he hit a 5 foot wave, got air and went vertical! He was thrown off the kayak, I caught his kayak on shore as he waded back in.
No biggie, we knew the swells were gonna be big so everything was inside the kayaks. And Steve is a boyscout. He tried again.
Then we had a great day of fishing. I was using my Basspro GPS rod with new Yozuri Xtec line I bought on clearance, and my brand spanking new Basspro Butterfly jig knockoff in 1/2 oz. I killed them. Caught more the 15 calicos, johnny bass, rockfish and sand bass. Also caught one dink barracuda that jump off my lure. Those Gakatsu Stinger are sharp. So sharp that they come out of the fish's face. Also, each butterfly jig has 2 hooks swinging on spectra. One would get caught in the mouth and the other would swing back and bury itself in the fish's head. Not good. I pinched the barb to make releases easier. I also tried my 2oz butterfly jig. It caught quite a few calicos too. But the action on mono and my ugly stick has not as good as on my lighter rod with the Xtec line. Cant wait to get a Trevala.
My best fish for the day was this Lingcod. Around 18 inches. Released.
On landing, the surf was up. 4-5 on average and some 7 foot swells as we were coming in. As I was reverse paddling to time my landing, I heard the two guys yell "GO!" and so I did. It turns out that as I was to land, a 5 foot wave picked up my kayak and turned it sideways. Luckily, I was able to surf it in, SIDEWAYS!
Steve had the best landing. He was lifted by another 5 footer which slammed his bow into the sand catapulting him into the air. Nothing lost or damaged.
I'm dead tired. I'll add more to the story when I wake up......Monday.
