Experimentation pays off at Leo 03242007
Well, I've done it. Mad scientist that I am, I think Ive successfully replicated the Shimano Butterfly jigging system, at about 30% of the cost.
Tested it today while kayak fishing with Paul. Killed them. And it was a slow day.
Chillin
First victim
And another
days biggest, 18+ inches
some more
smaller models
decent sandy
head shot
got tired taking fish pics. I like taking pics of friends better. Oscar, Steve, we missed you. NOT!
Paul with his sandy
Fun day. 2-3 swells, easy launch, and then the landing
And thats that.

Not bad but you must have missed the topic on the butterfly clones that Bass Pro Shops has for $4.99 with hooks.
Waiting for mine in the mail now.

I posted that topic Thats the offshore model from basspro up there.
Its not just the lures. The lighter freshwater models are okay with flourocarbon, copolymer or heavy lines. But the heavier models put way too much stretch on mono killing the action. One needs to use braided line. Even then, a rod with a fast taper will kill the action. I think I found just the right rod.

Do tell, talk to us about the rod and line combination. That isn't the freshwater version your using. So take us from rod, reel, line, jig to fish.

Well most of the system is apparent. Buy a butterfly jig knockoff like 1) Basspro freestyle jig 2) River2sea Knife jig 3) Shulure deep jig or the 4) Daiwa Sacrifice jig. Some of these need to be rigged with solid and split rings plus stinger hooks. That said, the Basspro models come rigged and a cheaper than most.
Spool your baitcaster or conventional reel with braided line and matching flourocarbon leader.
Most any reel will do. However, its best to use one with a very high line retrieve. This is to eat up the slack when jigging. The braided line when slack has a tendency to wrap the tip while jigging.
The $ 679 Torsa's retrieves 42+ inches of line per turn of the crank. The $ 179 Toriums will retrieve 46+ inches. The Saltist high speed reels take 47+ inchs of line per crank. That said, the Saltist high speed can be bought for 140 bucks. Even less for the Daiwa Sealine X high speed with 36 inch line retrieve about $ 79 on sale. 36 inches is about the least you need to take up slack on a 12 inch jigging motion with half a turn of the crank. You can study the jiggin motion thru the shimano website.
But for shallow waters, anything with a 5.0 or more ratio is usable just as long as you watch out for tip wraps.
All that is left if the rod.
Researching the Trevala, I found the following info:
Trevala Series rods
Shimano Trevala™ Jigging Rods, a component of the Shimano Butterfly™ Jigging System, feature Shimano TC4 Construction®, which wraps a double inner horizontal layer of advanced, dynamic fibers with an inner and outer spiral of high modulus graphite.
“The sensitivity from the wrapped graphite helps anglers feel every movement of the Butterfly jig and every movement of the fish, while the inner and outer wrapped T GLASS provides the needed durability from the direct fight with the fish.”
So. The Trevala has a graphite inner core with a fiberglass wrap. Hmmm....where can I buy a cheap but good quality rod like that with the same characteristics of the Trevala medium light rod. A 7 footer with lure ratings of 1-5 ounces, 20-50 pound line rating and semi parabolic (medium action) bend to lend more action to the lure. Found it. The Ugly Stick Tiger lite in Heavy.
Ugly Stik Tiger Lite rods
Tiger Lite Casting Rods feature Howald Process™ Triple-Built™ blanks, with a higher graphite content for lighter weight and smaller-diameter blanks. The result is rods that use a little lighter line and lure weight with actions perfect for jetty and plug fishing. Lite Rods use double-foot Fuji® aluminum-oxide guides with stainless steel frames to stand up to saltwater and Fuji graphite reel seats.
As said, I tested it, works real well. The parabolic bend of the ugly stik gives the lure good action while the braided line makes you feel connected. The basspro jigs work real nice too.
Total lowest cost - 179 ready to fish
Daiwa Sealine Reel - 79
Ugly Stik Tiger Lite Rod - 59
