Yakking Nicholas Canyon Report

Just a quick report on Saturday's outing. We had an uneventful launch into 2 foot waves with an occasional 3 footer. Worked the outside of the kelp line for bass and rockfish on BigHammers and curlytails. The current was slightly uphill with very calm conditions. The water temp was 58°F...another week or so and we should see 60°F, I hope. We released the sportfish (bass) and kept enough rockfish for dinner. One of the Olive Rockfish coughed up a small octopus...later on we found 5 more in his stomach!

The tide dropped enough to make landing a bit easier...got in between sets and kept everything intact. No visit from the DFG this time - they must've been looking for fair weather fishermen on the jettys!

Fishing on a mirror:

The take:

You'll notice that I added handles to the sides of our yaks. That's the only suggestion I'd make to Hobie about these kayaks, to make them easier to load onto a vehicle.

I can hardly wait for summer!

That's some niiiiiiiiiiiiiice water. Ever try topwater baits along the edge of the kelp in that kind of water?

Why is the kid wearing a crash helmet?

Bill, the launch/land can get dicey sometimes, with the rocks on the beach. Mostly, kayakers get hit on the head by their own kayaks, though. Just a precaution. We should try topwater baits.

We were at Casitas Sunday, when we saw the Amphicar...see our posting under freshwater reports.
