Busted at Refugio

Took the yak up Monday morning. Breezy, Drizzly, and Cool. But the water was pretty calm. Tried it all. I caught some bait and fished the kelp, and then drifted around up to the point for flatties. No go. Nothing even showed on the fish finder except bait balls. Then I threw various plastics with and without squid strips. Nada. Tried just squid. Nope. One of the probems was the large number of sea lions and dolphins everywhere. I spoke with the life guard and he hasn't seen much activity at all and said that the sea lion population is greater this year. The water temp was about 60 so hopefully as it increases the fishing will improve. I ended up at 5th St for about an hour of surf casting and c&r some rather large yellow fin croaker but no shovel noses. Still a great day just being on the water. If any of you yakers can get away mid-week to any of the local areas let me know.

Hey Ed, good to hear you got out there. Was the launch and land OK? The area looks fishy, but that doesn't guarantee anything. I'll let you know when I go out next. I may take a day off if the surf is especially calm.

thankfully the waves were tiimeable so that I was able to go out and come in on the super small stuff. No problem at all. You're right, It does look very fishy but the lifeguard that I spoke with told me that the past three years have been vety poor. I remember the late 70's and early 80's when I used to fish there it was pectacular. I don't want to give up though. When the water warms up a bit we need to give it another shot together.

I love Refugio. sorry for the skunk. I'll be back up at Seacliff for a while in July. Probably will fish for flatties up at Arco and some south SB beaches, I'll hit you up.
