Had a chance to fish a mothership trip on the Islander out of Fisherman's Landing. Great crew that treated us like kings. I'm used to hauling my gear and doing everything, but these guys get you in the water, load you up with bait, food - they even brought me my burger and extra bait on the water using the zodiac
The captain recommended we stick to calico fishing, but I was going to work the deeper water looking for yellowtail. We started at China point and paddle/fished all the way around Pyramid and ended up on the lee side to finish off the evening. Made bait as I went because the sardines were kind of lame for trolling on a kayak. I'd meter a small schools of fish in 80-100 ft and drop the sabiki down and pick up whitefish, calicos, sheephead, perch, in a addition to macs for bait. The place is fishy, got countless calicos on bait and plastics even fishing well off the kelp line.
I found a great dropoff that went from thick kelp in 60 ft to 130 ft in about 40 yards. Worked it knowing it was prime yellowtail grounds and got picked up and had a GOOD one going for about 10 minutes before it kelped me deep and busted me

Ended up catching some nice rockfish, sheephead, and a couple of smallish bonito. Here's a shot of my personal best calico and some scenery:
Fished La Jolla with my boss/buddy Les last night. The cuda took the night off which helped in finding this breezer mixed in with some crashing birds and dolphins. Hooked out in wide open water, which made for a nice stress free light drag fight. Watched one guy somehow farm 3 big bendo fish in about 20 minutes. He was PISSED.
Boss man.
Nice night for a paddle for sure!
