That's because that is one thing people don't want to spend alot of money on, they will spend $300-$400 on rod and reel, but only $25.00 on a PFD why not spend a little more fore something a little more comfy or user friendly like

this inflatable or one of the thin line type.
The bottom line on safety whether at work or play.. when you decide to do something unsafe you make a decision that effects alot more people than yourself. It effects your family and the people who have to risk their lives to save you or find your body.

I can talk from experience, I had a 28' Pursuit with twin yamaha 250's I had always thought of getting a 2nd fire extinguisher, but never did. The boat caught on fire while I was working on a fuel leak. I could not get to the one I had and while doing so my clothes caught fire and I had to jump overboard into 58 degree water... luckily another boater was close by and saved my azz. He called 911 and the FWC. They got pics of the boat prior to the 300 gallons of fuel exploding.

It's always easy to say it's not going to happen to me, or those guys were stupid to let that happen. But things do happen beyond our control. I am a very experienced seaman and I got my first boat when I was 12. It's not a matter of "if" but a matter of "when" and you have to be prepared for when.

Take it for what you want it's just my 2 cents.

For some reason the pic won't post...click it you will see the boat prior to explosion.

Absolutely agree that preparing and education is the key but more rules/laws don't answer that problem. Lock and key and laws against it never kept me out of the liquor cabinet as a teen. We don't need new laws that rarely ever help those that would or were all ready doing what the rule/law was to target. It is those that feel they don't need to or don't have to that cause the problem and there for make it a problem for those that all ready do. You can't force common sense on a person if they choose not to see it in the first place.

IMO.......................

This isn't a public situation.
This isn't a "closed to fishing" situation.
This isn't a "make a new law" situation.
This is a navy situation.

San Nic is run by the navy and the guys involved are/were owned by the navy.

we all need to remember that "young and macho", every once in a while, leads to tragedy. Some of us got lucky when we were "young and macho"; some of our friends weren't so lucky.

just remember their tragedy to make sure that you and yours don't repeat it.

I think part of it is also people rent kayaks but when they fall out of one, do they know how to get back on one? I practiced for two weeks at kitty beach flipping over and jumping in.......much harder to do when your in a rough seas situation..........

I laughed my off when I read this!! It made me think of, “get er done” and his partner in crime Jeff Foxworthy. Regrettably in this instance it is not funny. I was hoping the USCG would be able to locate these young men serving our country, even if they made a terrible misjudgment. Maybe in another situation that is not so serious I hope you pull this out of your bag of tricks. It is funny, just not now!

Well my grandfather used to say that

1 boy is a whole boy
2 boys are half a boy
3 boys isn't a boy at all.

When your on your own most men use very good common sense even if they have little to begin with but as you add boys to the mix...... Then again common sense is the least common of senses. To be honest I think most people have more 2 cents then common sense.

Ok I am done hehe.

Just like Sgt. Striker said, "Life is tough, it's even tougher when you're stupid".
