Ventura Report 11-24-07

Who: YakSailors, Potto, Les
When: 7:30-10:30am
Where: Ventura

We haven't been yakking since Veteran's Day, so we decided to go out. We figured that if it was still windy in Ventura, we could just keep heading North. There was no need to go any further. Ventura was relatively calm, with flat seas. The wind was from the SE when we started, but turned 180° by the time we got out.

The water was 60°F and very muddy, in fact, a bit like red tide. Visibility was only a couple of feet or so. We were fishing the bottom at around 40 ft, with bites here and there, but no real hookups. We managed to scratch up these fun fighters, who were tossed back:

Pete caught an assortment of bass and Les added some boccacio. the wind can be fickle, so we played it safe and headed in. I left my stuff in the car for a possible trip tomorrow.

Woke up this morning and immediately noticed two things.
1.) There was no dew on my car, which means the Santa Ana's are here.
2.) Someone had a fire in their chimney last night.

Picked up Les and off to Arco. We chose Arco to avoid the high winds that were from said to be between Rincon to PV. Once arrived, the water was a flat pancake. The water was chocolate brown. Alright! Who forgot to notify us of the red tide?

Bouys all over the place, you could mark each one on the GPS, but that would be silly. The Full moon or there abouts just setted as we got on the water. You can barely see it here, by the time I took out the camera is just about disappeared.

Sandbass, Calicos, Cabezons, commerical fisherman picking up crab traps and brown rock fish. Les kept on telling me I caught Salmon Grouper(Bocaccio), not Brown RF. I think he has been stuck on the Island too long fishing with Jeff. He needs to get out more.

On the way home, the smoke from the Malibu fire blowing from the East.
We were lucky at Arco. First the wind came from the SE (the bite was on), then no wind (bite off), then finally wind from the usual NW( bite off). Not many calicos came to play today.
